The Sunset Plaza is the prime hotel for visitors to Haboro. It's located slightly south of "Downtown" Haboro, only minutes away by foot to the central bus terminal and ferry harbor. It's hard to miss if you're driving north along the Japan Sea side into town, as it's a quick turn along the Haboro-gawa from the highway.||||The rooms, both Western and Japanese style, are quite spacious for what you'd regularly find in Japan, but also neatly kept as you would expect in Japan. Most of the rooms overlook the Japan Sea coast on the west side of the hotel, and therefore offer a fantastic view of eponymous Haboro Sunset. ||||The main draw for visitors to the hotel is the Onsen or hot spring. Rarely crowded, you can soak yourself in the relaxing natural spas, swim in the Rotenburo, or sit under a manmade waterfall. Access to the onsen is complimentary with your room, but a small charge for those not staying in the hotel.||||The top floor contains a gourmet French/Japanese fusion restaurant, featuring freshly caught seafood as well as vegetables, meat, and dairy from local farms. Ala carte items can be pricey, but the prix fixe is more economical. Try some Ororon-wine with your meal as well.||||Close to the west entrance is a souvenir store where you can stack up on Ororoncho stuffed animals, local treats, and other small items made in Haboro.||||Service is excellent on par for any hotel in Japan, but don't expect a high degree of fluency in English from the staff. It is in northern Hokkaido, after all. ||||The reason this review is missing (half) a star is that the entire hotel, except for what appears to be a public computer in the lobby dedicated to local tourist spots, does not provide internet access. For foreign tourists or business travelers who need to use more than their cell phone, this is a bit of a nuisance.||||Still, you won't find a better place to...

Read moreThe very friendly staff allowed me to check in two hours early, greatly appreciated. It seems to be the only hotel in Haboro with seven floors. I was given Room 510, a very large twin bed room with a view west to the Nihonkai (Sea of Japan.) ||The room had nice wooden floors, twin beds, a table with sofa and easy chair, a large desk, an in- room safe, a large closet, a classic biz hotel bathroom and a nice, large balcony to view the sea and sunset. The desk was a bit beat- up, but functional; everything else was fine and it was all very clean.||The bedding was very comfortable, and with the big sliding door to let in the cool night air, I slept well.||The breakfast was very good, with a good selection of mostly house- made items. There was a large platter of the local sweet shrimp, which the guests were gobbling up.||The onsen was excellent, a natural hot spring with indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, a cold water bath and two clear, hot water baths. The outdoor area was really nice, with a garden and a koi pond, much more substantial than most outdoor onsen. It’s one of the better hotel onsens and has a lot of locals going there. There’s a game room for the kids and a snack bar, too. The place was alive with energy.||In sum, I really liked this hotel and will definitely...
