It was a nightmare staying at Okuma Private Beach Resort. We spent four nights and opted for the Grand Marionette Room. We are bringing with us our service dog as this establishment pride itself as pet-friendly. Upon check-in on the 23rd of October, practically there was no one checking us in at 16:30 and we were left unattended for almost half an hour. Finally the duty manager came upon my request and completed the check-in procedure. To my surprise, I was asked to move my own luggage from the lobby to the Grand Cottage as there weren't enough bellboys. For the first time in my life, I had to push the luggage trolley up and down the slopes and moved all my luggage into the room located on the 3rd Floor.||Subsequently that evening, we dined at the hotel restaurant called Iju, food was okay and one of the female staff was very helpful. They accommodated our service dog and when I started to think things were finally in order, there was all of a sudden a firework display just about 20 meters away from where we dined. Our dog was terrified and jumped off the pet stroller and ran away. As a service dog, he's normally very calm but he had never been trained to tackle the loud noise and sparkle from firework display. I chased my dog for a few blocks and finally managed to catch him, and luckily he was not injured nor ran over by traffic. I complained to the duty manager as it turned out they had full knowledge of the firework display schedule but did not forewarned me about such a thing, even they knew I had a dog with me. If I had known that there was going to be a firework display in the middle of our meal, I would most likely be staying in my room to avoid any unnecessary accident happening. Again to my surprise, when I asked the reception, this hotel has had no room service.||On top of no room service, they also did not provide any laundry service. All they have is a number of coin washing machines and drying machines and everything is by way of self-service.||Another bad experience I had with this hotel related to their house-keeping service. We went out sightseeing on the 26th of October, and we left the hotel at 10:15 a.m. and the hotel helped prepared my car from the valet service and therefore they knew we were out. We returned to our room at 15:05 and the room was not tidy-up at all. No one came to service our room. When I complained, they said their house-keeping service runs from 10:00 to 17:00, and therefore cleaning up after 15:00 is perfectly normal. If that's the case, I wonder how could people checked-in at 15:00, their published check-in time.||I know I am not staying at a top notch five stars' hotel, but Okuma said it's a four stars' hotel. To me, it was not even four stars', but three stars at most! They are terribly short of staff, and all I could see, the ones providing service were elderly people and therefore service was either non-existing or inefficient.||I would advise people staying elsewhere at all cost and I certainly will not be going back to this hotel when I am...

From the moment I arrived at Okuma Private Beach & Resort, the experience was underwhelming and frustrating. Upon reaching the entrance, I was immediately approached by hotel staff who assumed—based solely on the fact that I’m not Japanese—that I was trying to get to the nearby military resort. Without even checking my reservation, he insisted I was in the wrong place and pointed toward the military facility. Only after radioing the lobby and confirming my reservation did he direct me to park and walk back to the front desk.
When I arrived at the lobby to check in, staff struggled to find my reservation—even though I provided the confirmation number. Eventually, they located it, copied my passport, and walked me through a map of the property, pointing out the room and facilities. After all of that, I was told to take a seat and wait to be shown to my room. I found this confusing—why couldn’t I just drop off my bags and go? I had plans to leave immediately after check-in, yet I was forced to wait nearly 30 minutes. Guests who checked in after me were shown to their rooms before me, with no explanation.
Finally, someone escorted me—by van—to the room, which was just a few hundred meters away (a one-minute drive at most). The staff member opened the door, said nothing, and left. There was no explanation for the wait or why a staff escort was necessary for such a short distance.
The resort grounds are nice in theory, but everything is visibly aged and poorly maintained. Many of the buildings show clear signs of wear—peeling paint, missing shingles, loose boards on decks—and it’s obvious the hotel hasn’t prioritized upkeep. The facilities feel outdated, and the overall aesthetic is far from what one expects from a four-star resort.
Dining was another disappointment. None of the on-site restaurants appeared to welcome walk-in guests; reservations seemed to be required at all times. If you check in later, it makes it hard to make a reservation in time for dinner the same day.
The room itself was perhaps the biggest letdown. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever slept on—clearly worn out and long overdue for replacement. For the price paid, I expected far better.
In summary, Okuma Private Beach & Resort feels like a place that might have been beautiful and well-run 20 years ago. Today, however, it’s a shadow of what it could be. Service was poor, the facilities are outdated, and the check-in process—especially forcing guests to wait so long after being processed—was frustrating and unnecessary. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it. There are far better options in Okinawa for the same or...
Read moreI stayed here with my partner for the second time. The first time was a five star experience for me and my partner. This time, I have to edit and downgrade my review down to an overall 1, consistent with some of the other low star reviews from foreign guests that the resort management appears to disregard and seems to care little about. I am not a person of extremes, but the contrasting stay experiences were, in fact, extreme enough to warrant the extreme revision (review edit). Granted, elder and senior staff members were warm, hospitable and professional, but the unwelcoming nonverbal aversion to and bigoted disdain I felt from most of the younger staff -- who spoke and made eye contact with my Japanese partner only, for example, was utterly deplorable. Any comment or question I had received a disdainful and hostile look as if they felt attacked or were that expecting anything I (or other foreign guests I observed) had to say or ask about would automatically be a complaint or some sort of insistent and socially reprobate and entitled demand -- something not to professionally, receptively, and responsively attend to, but to painfully endure. My partner and I are older and quiet and could not understand this deplorable behavior. We could only imagine it had something to do with the military personnel on the island. There were obvious young trainee staff members in the main dining areas who seemed especially rude and unwelcoming (the older ones, especially the older ladies, were warm and friendly, though, but the level of aversive and unfriendly behavior from the young ones could not make up for it, unfortunately). I truly hope management will get that sorted out, as the horrible experience of our second stay contrasted so starkly with the wonderful feeling we had the first time we stayed there... feeling fully welcomed by all (first time) and not like a barely tolerated "gaijin" (second time)... leading to a greater let down than if it had been...
