Sunroute Hotel Muroran||||Muroran is a small city in between Lake Toya and Noboribetsu. If you wish to visit both places and don’t want to stay in the expensive hotels or ryokans, Muroran is a nice location to be in. You can rent a car here and Lake Toya is about 60 km and Noboribetsu is about 20 km away. Very accessible. ||||Sunroute Hotel is in Higashi Muroran. Basically, it is not far away from Higashi Muroran Train Station. The Hokuto train stops here. Convenient. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the station. Taxi fare 550 yen. ||||The hotel provides free parking lots on site. They have two car parks. Car park one is very small and just behind the hotel. However you will need to hand over your car key to the hotel staff as they may need to move your car just in case. Car park two is just a one-minute walk away and you don’t have to hand over car key. ||||The rooms are basic. Water boiler is a small induction cooker. You can only boil one cup of water at any one time. ||||Breakfast spread is very simple. However, it is good enough for you to start your morning activities.||||Across the river within walking distance to the north of the hotel, there are many eateries and one large convenient store. It is on the left-hand side, 8-10 minutes' walk away - dead easy.||Supposedly, I had booked a smoking room (the first time I've made that mistake, if that was the case). That sort of screwed things up from the start, especially breathing through the mouth for the first few hours. Rank. Still, that is pretty much what should be expected in a smoking room it seems and the hotel should not be judged accordingly.||Even so, it's a pretty dowdy place and you'd probably only visit the city on business or if you'd done the finger-on-the-map exercise and landed here (which is what I did). Muroran itself has more to offer with some walks around the harbour and ocean. It's only 12 minutes away by the excellent regional JR service.||If I had to return to the area, I would probably choose elsewhere.
