Furano Hostel is a real gem. Overall the value is exceptional - very cheap for the quality of the service, the lodgings and the meals, which are provided at no extra cost. The hosts are friendly and considerate, and the location is great. It’s a great place to relax, and because it’s central, it’s a good base from which to explore Hokkaido.||My 14yo son and I stayed here two nights in early Autumn this year and loved it. We happily would have stayed longer. The hostel is run by Mikio and Yumi. Mikio built it in the late 1990s, early 2000s, and it has a beautiful handcrafted feel to it. There’s a great view of mountain ranges from the deck, where you can lie on the hammocks (I accidentally broke one - sorry! - and it was replaced within two minutes 😊) and sit by the fireplace. We had a two-storey private room with very comfortable beds, our own bathroom and a lovely lounge room upstairs with great light. It was very spacious for a Japanese hostel or hotel. ||Yumi is an excellent cook. She and Mikio provide breakfast and dinner. Meals include fresh fruit and vegetables, and the amount of care put into the preparation is truly astounding. Mikio prepares rice on a steamer on top of a wood-burning stove. It smelled and tasted delicious. ||Overall, Furano Hostel is highly recommended. One of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a hostel.||We hired a car for our stay, which I would definitely recommend doing if you can afford it - you’ll be able to see so much more. We visited Farm Tomita (very close to Furano Hostel), saw the blue pond near Biei, hiked on Asahi Dake (amazing!), went on an early morning walk in Nakafurano Forest Park and visited Fukiage Open-air Onsen - one of the best natural, outdoor onsens I’ve visited in Japan. ||On our way back to the airport, we visited Noboribetsu, which was also great. We walked around Hell Valley and enjoyed the warm...
Read moreI run a newsletter highlighting unique and affordable places all over the world and Furano Hostel totally fits the bill. The place is such a gem, and I only found it because of zooming in super close on Google Maps.||||||||Furano in the summer season stands out as the island’s most packed little town. The respite you’ll feel from crowds of tourists across the rest of Hokkaido comes to an end as you make your way to view the world-famous flower fields and taste those sweet Nakafurano melons. Naturally, as a result of the high season lodging in the area is notoriously expensive and books up several months in advance. But if you’re lucky you can score a coveted spot at Furano Hostel. ||||First of all, I really appreciate that they only book 3 months out in advance. When I started looking for a place in Furano 5 months out, I was shocked at how many places were booked up! I feel like Furano Hostel kind of gives you a fighting chance, so I set a calendar reminder to email them at exactly 3 months out and the reservation process was quite simple via email after that.||||The iconic red building was handmade and operated by an older couple. The space has relaxing outdoor spaces, accessible bathrooms, and the shared hostel rooms only accommodate four people each so you don’t need to worry about being packed in. You also won’t find the stereotypical party hostel crowd here, but a mix of solo-travellers, couples, and multi-generational families who are all respectful of one another’s privacy. In the morning we had an unassuming yet delicious breakfast sandwich before setting off for our next destination.||||I would highly recommend Furano Hostel to anyone visiting the area and looking for an affordable yet fantastic...
Read moreI stayed @ Furano Hostel for 2 nights, 24-26 September, 2018. Find the place very relaxing & quiet to unwind. We had 2 rooms, it was clean and came with attached bathroom. The rooms are like a log cabin which gave it a natural feel. ||||The front porch has an overview of Furano town from a hilltop sight. Nearby, there’s a lavender field.||You will need a car to visit other tourists sites e.g. Biei||||The room booking came with meals, breakfast & dinner. The meals are home cooked by Yumi-san, they are simple yet delicious utilising all local Hokkaido ingredients. The husband boiled the rice using wood and it taste fabulous.||||The hosts, Yumi and her husband are friendly and down right humble. ||I give it a 👍👍👍👍👍 5 star thumbs up and value for money.||We will definitely return to...
