We spent 3 days at Iizukatei as part of our honeymoon, and it was an absolute highlight of the trip. The staff were so friendly and kind, and went above and beyond to make sure we were looked after. The house itself is beautiful and the garden with the little water feature is so peaceful to sit out in. We opted to have a traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner at the house, which we enjoyed wearing the provided yukatas, which was a lovely touch! The food itself was excellent, especially as a lot of it was sourced locally, and the umeshu made from the plum tree in the garden was delicious.
The house is at the heart of the town of Bato, and part of a community project to allow visitors to discover the local area. We explored Bato with Iizukatei's Kawanishi-san who very kindly escourted us, recommending activities to try and places to eat. We tried out pottery making and onsen baths, ate delicious soba noodles and gelato, and walked around the temples and shrines.
Thank you so, so much to all of the staff at Iizukatei for making this part of our honeymoon so special and for the wedding presents! We would love to come back and stay again, and recommend this place to anyone wanting an authentic, relaxing experience in the heart of the Japanese...
Read moreWe stayed at Iizukatei for three nights and I have never felt more honored and respected as a guest anywhere. We were treated so warmly by all the staff who routinely went out of their way to ensure we had not just what we needed, but also what would make our stay more ideal. Routinely, they were proactively prepared with suggestions or items or anything else that would improve our experience, day to day or even minute to minute!
We had one full day planned by the staff and guided by an employee of the town hall (hi, Miyuki!) which was the highlight of our trip to Japan. These activities included soba making, visiting a sake + shochu distillery, and a farm to table dinner at a local farmer's house!
The other days, the staff confirmed reservations, helped move us around town, and even assisted locally with eating restrictions. Their service was nothing short of superior.
Otherwise, the grounds are beautiful, rooms are luxurious feeling, and food delicious. Because of how wonderfully Iizukatei and its staff helped integrate us into the town and its local vendors and activities to experience some of daily life in rural Japan, we plan on visiting here again in the future during a different season to enjoy more of the...

The experiences offered by the hotel were a highlight of our trip. We had so much fun learning to make soba noodles and crafting our own chopsticks, and we also enjoyed a truly relaxing time at the nearby onsen. These activities allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culture and added a unique touch to our stay.
