This hotel was excellent for the price. They have some very high quality rooms but we chose a basic Japanese style 12 tatami mat room with the city/ocean view. It was very spacious, with a large entrance/alcove, and side walk-in-closet/changing room. The view was great and service impeccable. I really enjoyed the meal service and quality as well. The space for dining is intimate and we enjoyed a private dining room. Very attentive service.||The hotel is not very close to a station and is located on a very large hill overlooking the city. I did not find this to be an inconvenience but rather a plus. It created relaxing feeling of escape from the city. I could enjoy a walk down and back up the hill prior to soaking in the onsen and enjoying a great dinner. Some may find the overall furnishings a bit outdated but for me I find found charming.||Staff were extremely warm and kind and one helpful staff even wrote me a personal haiku. He mentioned he was inspired by my strenuous hike down and back up the large hill. A personal touch to the charm and service of this hotel that I found touching. One of those acts of kindness from an excellent staff member that creates a memory for us that we will never forget. Thank you to him!||I was suspicious of the purely western style smaller basic room from the images but the standard Japanese room with city view is worth the price. It is slightly on the pricey side for Takamatsu City but the warm and professional service, room quality, meal quality, and space and views make it well worth staying. We will stay here again on future visits...

Read moreWe ended up staying at Hanajukai pretty much by accident, as the heavy rainfall of July 2018 made it impossible to reach our hotel in the Iya valley. Our decision to spend the night here turned out to be one of the best of our stay in Japan, however. The hotel itself is beautiful, with a stunning location up a steep hillside overlooking Takamatsu city, and remarkable attention to detail within. If you keep your eyes open, you will find yourself endlessly running into little decorative pieces, terrariums and all sorts of fascinating things. The rooms are wonderful, with a perfect combination of Japanese tradition and modern convenience (and, again, the stunning panoramic views of the city). The kaiseki dinner in the restaurant was also delicious (not to the extent that I would recommend anyone come here for the food alone, however). As indicated by the title of my review, the staff were the highlight of our stay, though. Incredible attention to detail (even by Japanese standards), combined with genuine warmth and a more personal touch than in most Japanese hotels. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, and will definitely stay here again if I ever have the pleasure of returning...
