We are a 60-something year old couple from Cape Town. We booked Kuganipi for 3 nights. Because of the weather the ferry went to the southern port Taketomi rather than Uehara which was a slight pain. Anyway, we took the free bus north and got off at the stop our host had advised. He was there waiting for us.Takamichi is an excellent guy - been living here with his family for some years and is the original nature guide in Iriomote. Accommodation is good. Sleep on floor, good bathroom, laundry and cooking facilities. Literally on the beach which is beautiful and empty apart from a few locals. We shared food with Takamichi and his family two evenings which was great fun, borrowed the bicycles and also rented a small car very cheaply from someone in the village. You need to buy food from a supermarket so that you are sorted at the least for breakfast. We were there slightly off season so many restaurants were closed but there was a really good Chinese (!) restaurant within walking distance. Lots of noise online about insects but we kept the sliding screens closed and we didnt have any problems. Highly...
Read moreThis is definitely one of the best places we stayed at during our 11 weeks Trip through Japan 💖
The location is amazing, you can hear the waves from the terrace, there are flying foxes in the village and the night sky is breathtaking. The apartment is spacious, very clean and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. Soy sauce, salt and spices are there, as well as some other basic ingredients. We loved the washing machine. And we had the best day exploring the mangroves and the coast with the canoe we could borrow for free!
The host Takamichi is a very kind person. He was so helpful and communication was easy. He even gave us a little guided tour through the village and told us about the history and traditions.
5 stars are not enough, and we will for sure come back to this lovely place. Even though our stay was short because of the typhoon, we have a lot of very fond and...
Read moreThis is a slice of paradise. Though we weren't worried when we booked, Takamichi-san's small beachside cottage exceeded all of our expectations.
Its clean, modern, and incredibly well located. 20 meters from a private secluded beach with crystal clear water, there is nothing to complain about.
I'd be lying if I said this wasn't the best Airbnb I've ever stayed in. Takamichi-san is a fantastic host. Both he and his family made us feel very welcome and brought us several small local delicacies throughout our stay. He speaks great English as well as Japanese and has been living in Iriomote for 20 years, making him a local expert.
I was hesitant to write this review, just because I wish I could keep this place private, but they deserve all the praise.
Do not think twice about booking this. It...
