By not offering Dinner, this country-side ryokan is basically showing No Concern for its customers.
The Reception simply put up that v regretable face & said "Sorry" ...which makes her more insincere. If she is truly sorry, at least offer some good ready-made Microwave food! I am happy to pay for them.
The Receptionist told me there is one small restaurant open in this small town. My alternative is to drive at least 22mins to another town. And there is no guarantee that restaurant is open.
So I am now writing this from this small restaurant. It is a v humbling experience reminding myself of my Junior High School lunches. 😏
Beside lack of care for their customers, this hotel Onsen lacks maintenance to the extent I am very concern about its hygiene standard. I cannot believe the water taps have turned BLACK and the shower head plastic tubes are full of black spots (mould ?) Yuck! It does not cost much h to replace plastic tubes!
The only reason that I give this Ryokan 2 Star is its view of the lake and the authentic onsen. Its indoor and outdoor bath are very well designed and spacious. It is quite rare to see this level of onsen in newer hotels these days. This ryokan was probably a state of the art hotel 40 years ago.
Luckily the room is newer & seems clean
Hope the Owner can find new capital to replace the overdue equipments in the Onsen & offer catering even during low season.
Right now, It is great asset wasted by poor...

We travelled with a group of 8 high school students from Hong Kong and we were late to check in due to some unexpected reasons. By the time the students arrived, restaurants and grocery store nearby have already been closed. The host took us to the grocery store to buy some instant Japanese curry and rice. She took all the trouble to reheat the food for students. For us adults who booked meal plan, the host kindly agreed to delay our dinner time to 08:30 pm. Food was great.
This is not a luxury onsen inn and facilities are quite basis. In view of the wonderful service, I still would like to recommend this inn to others.
For those guests who do not order meal plan, there is a local restaurant which makes tasty Japanese pancake. Ask the host who will show you where the restaurant is. It is a small privately-run onsen inn, non-Japanese visitors please be reminded to arrive the inn on time. If there are any changes on your travel plans, please notify the host immediately.
The host speaks little English but she tried all her best to communicate with us and...
Read moreLake view from room is superb and hotel staff is fantastic. Room has no shower tub so guests must use the public onsen, which can be cleaner like all common area (maybe it is the age of the hotel showing). Outdoor onsen is lovely, but English information is lacking on how to access it, like all facilities here since the staff speaks no English and no English hotel manuals are provided. Hotel did not provide dinner service during my stay and there was only one Okonomiyaki restaurant nearly. Mosquitos galore in my room and I was bitten all over (probably due to the lakeside location); even the anti-mosquito solution provided by the hotel did not help. Even considering the higher room price, it is a treat to visit this amazingly beautiful, remote...
