The good: Three onsens all with rivers views that use the natural hot groundwater. A great place to soak after a long day of hiking. They vary in temperature, two are fully outdoors one indoor with windows all overlooking the river all private. Getting the natural onsen experience of Totsukawa Onsen as much as you want with such a good view is auto 5 star. One bath was so hot I could not use it, which was a shame but if you like it hot...
Most rooms have great views of the river, including the dining room.
Food is incredible, and you get a LOT. Local wild boar hot pot with a ton of veggies, mushrooms and noodles. Also local wild deer and river fish, meharizuahi, rice, sashimi and pickled veggies. Breakfast was fish meat eggs veggies and rice.
Free laundry, although only one washer and dryer.
Fairly close to Kumano kodo, and an easy road walk given the surrounding trail.
The bad: It's a 5 story place with steep stairs, and after a day or days of hiking it's not pleasant to get around the place.
It's noisy, the walls are paper thin and if you're near an onsen floor or the laundry it's very loud and can be at quiet hours.
Virtually no english. Brush up on your basic Japanese. The owner speaks a bit but her son and staff don't.
If you're taller and/or have larger feet the slippers are small and the...
Read moreWe stayed here while walking the Kohechi route of Kumano Kodo. Hot spring baths were lovely. You can use them privately and have a beautiful view of the river and mountains. They are very hot, which was great to relax after a long hike. Very large and tasty hot pot dinner. Rooms also had a view out to the river and mountains.
Main downside was the building is not very soundproof and there are many rooms. There happened to be a large group that arrived late at night who were very loud getting situated (not the hotel's fault, but if quiet is very important for you, there is some risk depending on how many and how noisy the other...
Read moreIncredible views to have when you’re hanging out at an onsen ! Very peaceful and private. We were able to enjoy the onsen even with my husband having tattoos. The onsen is a private family use setup, so nobody can go in until the previous user is done. Of course, make sure to be respectful!
There is more than one onsen at the location. And the hours for use are very convenient!!
Very spacious rooms ! Would stay here again! Thank you for the...
