Sipadan-Mabul Resort, Semporna, Sabah. — Hotel in Mabul Island

It is the first time I visited Sipadan. Having heard so many great diving reviews about the place and with a high price tag, my hopes were high. Stayed for 7 nights in the water bungalow.||||Park permit: Alert to those going to Sipadan, they had applied new rules to the place. First, starting from 2023, only 2 dives per day pass. Second, the price of the pass has shot up enormalously! The 1st day pass cost 140 RYM. 2nd or 3rd one will cost 540 RYM! These are the price of the entry pass to Sipdadan island, not including the cost of your dive||||Resort: Took really long to get there if you arrive from kuala lumpur. Domestic flight to Tawau, 1.5-2 hour bus to Sempourna, then 1 hour jetty to get to the island. If you are diving in Sipadan, will take 30 minutes jetty before arriving. This place was flooded with day visitors (mostly locals), like 60-100 per day. So if you are looking for something quiet, definitely not your choice.||||Water bungalow: my room faced outwards to the sea giving me great view every morning and during my afternoon nap. The room was equipped with TV, safe, air con, hair dryer. The water pressure of the bath was low but i guess can't expect too much on an island. The bed was comfortable. The balcony outside the bungalow offers great view and one can relax on the sunbed and shaded area. Satisfied with the room in general.||||Food: *REALLY BAD! Served in a buffet style with really long lines as there were only limited choice of food. 1 pan of fried stuff (fries/fried wanton/ spring roll), 1 grilled fish (usually overcooked), 2 BBQ protein (either sausages, lamb, chicken), 6 hot dishes (4 protein, 2 veg), rice and soup. The hot dishes kept repeating themselves: chewy stir fried beef, chicken nuggets in different sauce, tofu (which went sour), overcooked bak choy, beans, cooked frozen prawns. Not only are the choices being limited, as there were crowds of people, they ran out early too. The rice was mushy and the chicken winter melon soup was kind of artificial in taste. This was the menu for dinner, lunch was even worse with only 2-3 hot dishes, cooked spagetti and rice. The coffee machine only worked in breakfast. For cakes, they were dry and tasted buttery irrespective of the colour or intentional flavour. Other times, you can only have instant coffee or sweet drinks. Given a long stay there, the food has made it really difficult and I wish i had brought some food myself. If you are going on a diet and wish for some weight loss, this might be a solution. ||||Staff: Really nice staff. I have reflected the food issue on-site and the staff has kindly fried some eggs for me. The Dive masters had been really helpful and nice as well. Everyone carried smiles around the resort.||||Dive: ||Mabul/ Kapalai: turtle, garden eel, lots of nudibranch, ghost pipefish, seahorse, frogfish, cuttlefish, lion fish, crocodile fish, scorpion fish, napoleon, eels, manta shrimp, lobster, box fish, blue spotted ray||Sipadan: schools of barracuda, jackfish, bumphead parrot fish, reef sharks, countless turtles, nice reef over dropoff and near south point||Most dives have been nice and really enjoyed the vast majority of sealife. ||Personally I am more amazed by the finds near Mabul/Kapalai region, i think max 2 days in Sipadan are good enough6am ||Water is usually better at early morning, we did our first dive at 6am, second at 8:30am, would recommend that||||Overall, a memorable experience but the food has been a...

We stayed at Sipadan Mabul Resort (SMART). We wanted to stay at Mabul Water Bungalows (MWB) but they were booked. These are under common management and you can go back and forth between the two by road or bridge.||In the end, we were very glad we were at SMART. As others have mentioned, these resorts cater to the Chinese. MWBs were all Chinese and we would have been the one two Westerners. Plus, you only have the boardwalk areas for movement. There are ample walkways and terraces but I think I would have felt trapped.||On the SMART side, there was only one other person there (it was their slow season). He was from California and we took many of our meals together.||Because there were only 3 of us at SMART the first few days, we ate all of our meals at MWBs. Because of the Chinese, almost all the food was Chinese. Several nights there were giant platters of Tuna Sashimi. There was generally a chicken, beef, seafood (shrimp, fish, crabs), vegetables (mostly stir fried bok choy), rice, lots of fresh fruit and lots of different desserts.||When SMART had an influx of guests, we started eating there instead of MWBs. The food was typically the same or similar.||The food was fine but we would have preferred more variety, especially since we were in Malaysia.||As others have mentioned, alcohol is very expensive, but this is true all over Malaysia. It is a Muslim and 2 at SMART. They appear to be poorly stocked but I did not try any of them.||We stayed in the stand alone chalet. It is very comfortable and air conditioned. If you're diving 3 times a day any time you are there you are ready to nap! A note, the bathroom shower is actually in a fenced in area with screen at the top. As a result, your bathroom is not air conditioned.||As far as the grounds are concerned, they were beautiful and sandy. And, no, the pictures on their website are not only of the"nice"areas. It ALL looks like that! The road between SMART and MWBs does house their physical plant including power plant, water works, sewage treatment, lumber yard and workshop. But this is far enough away that it never bothered us. The bridge between the two resorts is beautiful, especially in the evening.||I am a diver and started quickly with incredible dives. Sometimes the currents were a bit strong on a couple of the dives. I was the only OW diver so I ended up with a personal dive master. She was incredible and was able to point out many things that I might have missed. She even took my GoPro and filled me with sharks, giant sea turtles, and jetfish. The guy from California was AOW so he dove deeper and also ended up with his own dive master.||My husband was not certified and took lessons. He finished in 3 days. During his last instruction day he was able to participate in our afternoon dive with his teacher. The next two days, we all dove together.||Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Elizabeth (manager) was a huge help when we needed to change our flights (read their instructions carefully!).||A note on internet. It is almost non-existent. I use Verizon and made a couple of calls from the island with good reception. My mobile data was very spotty but sometimes better that the resort WiFi.|Don't plan on any downloads! Мы были в Малайзии в первый раз, хотя постоянно ездим в этот регион уже более 15 лет.||Рады, что оказались в таком замечательном месте!||Нас двое: я дайвер, моя жена только снорклер.||||Продолжительность пребывания у нас была 10 ночей, то есть 9 полных дней. Из них я нырял на Сипадане 6 дней, жена плавала туда 4 дня. В остальные дни посещали соседний остров Капалаи и окрестности того острова, где жили - Мабул.||||Ресорт состоит из двух частей: одна на суше, вторая - бунгало на сваях над морем, с другой стороны острова. Мы жили на суше, в отдельном шале, на первой линии, с видом на море. В море не купались, хватало дневных выходов. Каждая из частей имеет свой дайвцентр и свой ресторан, но в декабре было мало гостей в островной части, поэтому ресторан открывали не всегда, а на завтрак и на ужин нас возили во второй. Там была кофе-машина :-) Настоящий кофе!||||Транспорт организован на электромобилях. Называют их багги. Ни разу никуда пешком не ходили :-) Всегда возили, стоило только попросить.||||О питании. Когда не очень большой отель и мало гостей, наивно рассчитывать на десятки разнообразных блюд; число их было ограничено, буквально не более 5. Но при этом очень вкусно и разнообразно день ко дню, то есть это не были одни и те же блюда, подаваемые каждый день. Пару раз устраивали барбекю. Потрясающе вкусно! Креветки, кальмары, восхитительная баранина, острая сильнозажаренная говядина, бычьи хвосты, цыплёнок... Отдельно, конечно, рождественский ужин.||||Номера. Телевизор (ни разу не включали! поэтому про то, какие каналы показывает, сказать ничего не могу), сейф, фен, электрочайник, набор чай-кофе (хотя в ресторане с 7 утра и до позднего вечера можно было приготовить себе ещё и какао, и чем-нибудь перекусить). В туалете постоянно возобновляемый набор всяких полезностей: мыло, шампунь, лосьон для тела, палочки для ушей, зубные щётки, бритвенные станки, шапочка для душа, набор ниток-иголок... Может, даже что и забыл :-) Душ под открытым небом!! :-) И вода из него не собирается в канализацию, а просто выливается через щели в платформе прямо на песок :-)||Вода в душе, понятное дело, горячая, регулируемая напором и установкой на бойлере. В раковине только холодная. Не без приключений. :-) Однажды моей жене показалось, что она плохо закрыла кран в раковине, капало, и она решила завернуть потуже. Хрупкая женщина свернула этот кран (он развалился у неё в руках), и струя воды ударила в потолок. Хорошо, я был рядом, кинулся, закрыл струю и, как Самсон в известном фонтане, героически удерживал, пока жена бегала за помощью на ресепшн :-) Когда после ныряния вернулись в номер, всё было приведено в порядок.||||Интернет. ЧУДОВИЩНЫЙ!!! Формально есть WiFi по всей территории отеля, но (для тех, кто понимает) команда ping -t -w20000 8.8.8.8 (у меня с собой был ноут) выдавала ответ, меньший секунды, буквально пару раз, а характерный отклик был порядка 6-8 секунд!!! К тому же после одной ночной грозы роутер отвалился, и в наших домиках дня три связи не было, только в ресторане.||||Теперь о главном. Дайвинг/снорклинг. Ради чего сюда и имеет смысл ехать. Замечательный! Остров Сипадан имеет вулканическое происхождение (чуть ли не единственный вулканический остров во всей Малайзии), выходит на поверхность с глубины порядка 500-600 метров, в результате животный мир разнообразнейший, разительно отличающийся от того же Мабула и Капалаи, которые стоят на шельфе с характерной глубиной несколько десятков метров, хоть расстояние от Мабула до Сипадана всего 12 км. Акулы (белопёрые, чернопёрые, серые рифовые), огромное число крупных, метра по полтора черепах (в один из дней жена решила посчитать, сколько черепах встретит, досчитала до 25 и бросила считать, но черепахи не закончились!). Большие косяки барракуд (не очень крупных, метра по пол, но сотни!), стаи шишколобых рыб-попугаев (humphead parrotfish), наполеоны, тунцы, огромные групперы, осьминоги... ||||Организация дайвинга. Великолепная! В день - 3 погружения, либо все три на Сипадане, либо, если не попал в квоту, первое на Капалаи и вторые два на Мабуле. Тоже интересные, но в сравнение с Сипаданом не идут. Сипадан - заповедник, число посетителей в день не более 120 человек. Права на посещение предоставлены 12 ресортам, 4 имеют максимальную квоту 14 человек (наш в их числе), у остальных, как следует из элементарной арифметики, меньше. У некоторых 6-7 в день. Причем имеются в виду именно посетители, а кто ты - дайвер, снорклер, просто приехал полежать на пляже - значения не имеет. Так что нам повезло: если бы отель был полон, сходили бы на Сипадан раз-два, не больше.||В перерыве между погружениями - сначала лёгкий перекус, затем полноценный обед. При погружениях на локальных островах привозят на отдых в отель, на Сипадане организуют питание и отдых в специальных беседках.||Можно самостоятельно нырять на отельном искусственном рифе, но на это не было не то желания - времени :-) Один раз только сходил с дайверами из соседнего домика на ночное. Поскольку ходили втроём, без дайв-мастера, денег с нас не взяли. И вообще всё оказалось намного проще, чем можно было представить. Написали накануне на доске с расписанием свои имена с пометкой "night dive", и после дневных погружений наше снаряжение выгрузили у нужного места, а когда мы туда вечером пришли, стояли три заправленных баллона. Погуляли часок и вернулись :-)||Дайверы распределяются по группам, кто и где будет завтра нырять, с вечера, и им уже выделяется конкретный дайв-мастер. Он обязательно за ужином найдёт тебя, представится, познакомится. Под водой не более 3-4 человек на одного дайв-мастера. Все погружения интересные, безопасные, маршрут продуман, с мгновенным учетом складывающейся ситуации с видимостью или течением. Я нырял с 4 разными, и только один из них (и то лишь один день с ним) на общем фоне показался не таким заботливым, как остальные. Отдельное спасибо дайв-мастеру Кингу (King). Замечательный профессионал, интересные маршруты, находил и показывал много живности. На второй день на Сипадане пришёлся мой 400й дайв. Я рассказал об этом, и Кинг сделал всё, чтобы это юбилейное погружение стало для меня незабываемым :-) Спасибо!||Special thanks to the dive master King. Always professional approach to safe diving!
