I stayed in one of their self-contained budget fan rooms - a.k.a. cabins - as I would barely have time to enjoy any type of resort due to being very busy doing my EFR/Rescue Diver certifications combo in 4 days. Poor value for money ratio when it comes to that price range at this "resort." Yes, you "only" pay the walk-in rate of 50 ringgit (about USD $13) a night for 2 people in the budget room, but is it really worth it, given the other options available elsewhere in Salang? (See my review for Ella's at a later date -- same price range, yet exceptional value).
ROOM/CABIN: Seemingly clean upon entrance, dusted floors. Yet, seems like my bed sheets had not been changed in a while due to the room being empty - I found some dust and a few dead moths on them. No mosquito nets provided.
Scratches all over toilet, making it seem dirty even though it was actually clean. "Shower head" is a pipe with water flowing out of it. Chipped wood and paint all over. Really short bed (I'm only 5 feet, 4 inches and barely fit in it). Any other average European or American will probably have their feet hanging out of it.
FOOD: I only ate once at their restaurant due to bad experience. I ordered noodles with peanut sauce (mie Bandung) - a soupy concoction that still had large chunks of the peanut paste used to cook the sauce. This shouldn't happen; clearly under-cooked. Noodles, however, were guey (as of, overcooked). Taste was also odd. Unsure whether that's how the original recipe's supposed to taste like? I had tastier noodles (and other dishes) down at its neighbor's, Salang Dream restaurant, by the jetty.
LOCATION: I loved Salang. Nice village, quiet, yet charming. It was highly recommended to me by another traveler besides ABC. Absolutely stunning sunsets. Nice stretch of sandy beach, too. Beautiful water, laid-back vibe. Incredible snorkeling and diving off the jetty by the way - saw more schools of fish here than I did at Sipadan. Pretty freaking crazy if you ask me!
Unfortunately, I can't recommend travelers to stay here even if on a budget. As previously mentioned, better options available - stay at Ellas instead. I must say, however, that I did take a peek into their newer oceanview AC rooms and they looked much better. Perhaps you would have a completely different experience from mine if you picked a higher room category when staying at Salang Indah. Given the other reviews I read elsewhere, however, those are...
Read moreAmazing experience staying here for 5D4N. We got the triple deluxe (room BF1). The room is spacious for the 3 of us, with a fridge, many surfaces to put our things and plug points. Our view was excellent, especially in the early morning and evening. The balcony area has a drying rack to dry our clothes and gears. Beds were clean and comfortable. No problems with the air conditioner. Housekeeping on request. The receptionist staff was friendly and communicated well. She was also quick to help troubleshoot any problems I have with my room. My only issue was with the shower's water pressure. It was quite low. I hope they can fix it. Otherwise, the heated shower was nice especially after a night dive. The price for my room was around 270/night.
Location wise, it's very good because it's near my dive center (Marine Monkees) and restaurant. Their Salang Indah restaurant has excellent fried squid (sotong goreng tepung) and tumeric chicken and rice (nasi ayam kunyit). Expect island prices for the menu but I appreciate that it tastes good at least. Plenty of seating area, including alfresco dining. Beach view was a plus point. I went back to the restaurant for every meal. I just hope the smokers can pick a spot that's downwind so that their smoke does get blown in other people's direction and ruin other people's meals.
Activities to do nearby are: diving (I recommend Marine Monkees), paddle boarding, snorkelling and strolling along the beach. I had a very enjoyable and relaxing vacation with Salang Indah Tioman. Thank you for the...
Read moreAmong many islands/snorkeling trips I've been, (Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Aur x2 resorts & Moalboal, Cebu) i can say Salang Indah resort is a good balance of rustic kampung vibe, convinience & tourist population. Check in was a breeze. Food served were all delicious and never a day we went hungry. Even on one of the day we came down slightly late for the buffet dinner, they saved some food for us. Room prices varies for different budgets. Best budget gets an unrestricted sea view. Room were relatively clean, with mini fridge, kettle, hangers, towel, soap and shampoo. There's a proper concrete jetty unlike other islands I've been. Afew convinient shops so you don't have to bring your own snacks, toiletries, drinking water and there's souvenirs, ice cream, finger food, burger & hawker stalls. Everything is priced relatively close to on the mainland, just slightly more. (Some islands charge up to 50% higher due to logistics) Staff and locals at Salang Indah were all VERY nice and friendly. For us our highlight was our snorkeling trip. Our guide was a really experienced free diver who showed us various wildlife and at the same time knowledgeable. Follow his TikTok @mermanpulao for a preview. Overall he made our snorkeling trip an unforgettable one. Overall Salang Indah is suitable for couples, big families or friends. We will definitely be coming back! Thank you...
