I came to stay at this hotel by chance after my booked hotel failed to provide me with the room with a balcony that I requested. I was pretty desperate when I arrived and the receptionist managed to find me a room for the whole two week stay. The € 1,337 I paid for board (not including breakfast) cost more than my entire package at the other hotel.
I was given Room 301 which is a small narrow room with a single bed. Despite this the room did not feel cramped and was generally clean, although the furniture had seen better days - in particular, a dirty, stained chair and a creaking bed. The bathroom was clean although the shower cubicle was rather dilapidated and leaked. The balcony was small as an air conditioning unit dominated the space and there was no furniture.
Pros: 1.) Throughout my stay the reception staff were always friendly and tried to be helpful. 2.) The cleaning staff cleaned my room daily to a reasonably good standard and provided fresh towels. 3.) The Wifi in my room was excellent and I streamed shows on Netflix with no issues. 4.) The fridge came in very handy to store drinks and food.
Cons: 1.) The room had poor sound insulation and due to its location was noisy late into the night. 2.) Breakfast cost €8 euros per day and I found the food offered basic and unappealing, which is why I only had breakfast there on the one occasion. 3.) Whilst staff at the hotel endeavoured to be helpful, on several occasions I observed other guests shouting and screaming at reception staff in frustration. 4.) Hotel management seemed to be indifferent to the concerns of guests and left reception staff to deal with problems. 5.) The only lift was small accommodating a maximum 3 or 4 people and took ages to arrive once called.
6.) However, the issue which ruined my stay at The St. Julian's Bay Hotel was the hygiene of the bedding. From the first night the bed, in particular the pillows, smelt very unpleasant like it had not been changed in a long while even though it looked clean. 7.) A couple of days into my stay I notice an unsightly red rash on one of my arms which by the end of the first week had spread to cover both arms, feet and ankles with patches elsewhere on my body. I was concerned it might be something contagious like scabies or bed bugs.
When I complained to Reception about the bedding and my concern that I had likely contracted this rash from something in my hotel room there was no duty manager available to deal with my issues. It was not until I returned to the hotel the following afternoon that I found an unsigned typed letter from Reception pushed under the door apologising for my ‘health concern’ and recommending a pharmacy. It also advised that they had arranged for my bedding to be completely replaced.
I feel this response from the hotel was the bare minimum and to add insult to injury my room had not been cleaned that day despite my returning after 15.30. Shortly thereafter a cleaner knocked on my door and gave me a plastic bag with fresh towels and bedding...so I literally had to strip and make my own bed which is when I discovered the filthy condition of the pillows! I had no choice but to put fresh pillowcases on these pillows which did little to remove the unpleasant smell.
Since returning to the UK I have discovered that the type of room I stayed in is not even available to book on the hotel’s website, so one can only imagine what this room was used for prior to my visit. A fact that was certainly not drawn to my attention, which makes it all the more galling considering that I had paid € 95 per night to stay there. With the benefit of hindsight I feel hotel staff saw me coming and exploited the situation by charging € 95 per night for a single room!
Needless to say, I do not recommend staying at The St. Julian’s Bay Hotel as my experience at this hotel was without a doubt the worse I have experienced in the 20-years I have been...
Read moreThought I was getting a great deal with this hotel but honestly, there were so many issues I wish I paid more to stay elsewhere. The staff are really nice and do the best they can with the conditions. That being said, the conditions are awful and we had issues from the moment we arrived. I do not recommend staying here if you care about the quality of your stay. If you are only focused on saving money, be prepared to deal with many issues. I would give this place 1 star for the quality and 2 stars for the staff and location.
First, and most importantly, it’s dirty. The bathroom had tremendous issues. The fan attached to light produces a DISGUSTING smell, like raw sewage that seeps into the room and lingers for a long time even if you have the light on for only 2 minutes. The light and fan are connected, so there is no way to turn off the fan and stop the smell. You have to sit sideways on the toilet because there is only 1 foot of space between the toilet and sink. The bathroom door was extremely difficult to open, I needed to use my entire body weight to push it open. The shower was also leaking and flooding the bathroom after 2 minutes. When I went downstairs to ask for more towels, they told me they only had 5-10 extra towels for the entire hotel and couldn’t give me all of them. Later, I heard another guest complaining that housekeeping took all of their body towels and only left 2 floor towels. I heard a different guest complaining about yellow stains on the “fresh” towels they got and asking if their sheets were changed because they also had stains and were disgusted. There were stains on the side of our bed and the duvet has no covering, just two sheets below and above it, which gives the impression they don’t wash the duvet.
Second, accommodations are scarce and I think they have barely enough supplies for all the rooms. They said they would bring blankets and pillows for the futon while we were out and when we returned at 2 AM there were no blankets or pillows. When I went downstairs to ask, the only staff in the hotel at the time had no idea where the spare blankets were and it ended up taking 30+ minutes to get the blanket. Sadly suggested we wait until the morning when housekeeping returned, and I told them that was ridiculous and refused to leave the front desk until they went to look for a blanket. Ended up getting one and it was the only spare blanket on the floor!
Third, I paid extra for the balcony room not realizing the rooms are entirely not sound proofed. Some noise is normal but you can hear every small conversation on the street below (a very busy street) and everything in the hallways and surrounding rooms too. It was a nice view but probably not worth it for me personally.
The location is great, right near a super market, bus stop, and beach. However, the issues we had really disappointed me. The smell in the bathroom was really atrocious. Would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone...
Read moreI usually dont write reviews, but I must admit one of the worst experiences of my whole life with st Julians Bay Hotel. from the first day, we requested an iron plus ironing board. the Iron had issues and there was never an ironing board, they told us they will order a new one and get us one. everyday we were asking for updates and they acted like it was the first time they hear such a request. (mind you, it was urgent request) after afew days, I had no choice but to Iron my clothes on the bed sheets. The Bed sheets plus towels had red and brown stains. The bathroom was so small that mid washing, I had to keep half of my body out of the shower place so I can move around and pick up a soap. the doors and all the appliances were so old, they got stuck sometimes and you had treat them with a trick sometimes to close and open them. The place has over 60 rooms and one small elevator for 4 people max, and the waiting for the elevator was at least 5 mins to 10 mins. (7floors) The breakfast was an area where there was no wifi/signal plus extreme humidity and heat to the point you lose appetite. The whole building was like a bunker for war, the moment you enter it, no signal, and the wifi works only 50% of the times. My colleague’s room had a broken AC that was no resolved for 2 weeks and she had cockroaches in her room as well. we were staying as a business trip and we needed to rest well. the walls were extremely thin and there were groups of people at 2 to 4 in the morning yelling and screaming all night and we got used to sleep in a jungle like environment. there was loud construction in the Saturday morning right next to my room in the hotel. Some night people were smoking weed in the hotel and the very strong smell would give me headaches it was throughout the whole corridor plus in my room. It was all escalated to the reception each time, but nothing changed. At the beginning we were escalating to the reception but they would disrespectfully (with smirk) repeat the same script over and over everyday to the point that we gave up and after a few days started to adopt to the situation. even when we requested to change the rooms, no resolution. The rooms dont have enough light and at nights sometimes I had to use my phones flash light to see clearly in case i looked for something. The cleaning staff sometimes did not clean when I left the sign”clean my room” and sometimes they cleaned when I didn’t want them to clean. The Hotel is in a good location but in general one of the worst experiences of my whole life. I absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND this place and if you ever hear this name,...
