This place is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and pristine. Each room has high ceilings with weathered wooden beams overhanging an impossibly comfortable bed. My room was at the back of the hotel, adjacent to a pleasant garden with birds and avocado trees. The rooms and hotel are impeccably clean - the floors are mopped daily. The owners Vicki and Eric have excellent taste - I felt like I was living in a magazine spread.
Before coming to Michoacan I was worried about safety. Everything I'd read in the US about the region highlighted the drug violence that occurred in central Mexico several years ago. I stayed here, at Posada Yolihuani, for 2.5 months and visited many towns in the region (Patzcuaro, towns around Lake Patzcuaro, Morelia, Uruapan etc.) and AT NO POINT DID I FEEL UNSAFE. I frequently found myself walking alone through Patzcuaro in the dark and not once felt threatened. The small-town feel was pervasive.
The owners and staff at Posada Yolihuani are earnest and trustworthy and familial. I left my laptop, wallet, cash, passport, etc. in plain sight in my room for the entire period without an inkling of apprehension or worry. They even moved my wallet from the table to my dresser when outside workers were coming in to re-finish some of the beams.
The location is superb. It's a block from the thriving Plaza Grande, which is a short enough distance for a three minute walk, but far enough to muffle the noise and bustle of the main square.
I've traveled quite a bit in a wide range of accommodations and can confidently say that Posada Yolihuani is now the standard to which I will hold...
Read moreWhile we've visited Pátzcuaro several times over the years we never had the good fortune to stay at Posada Yolihuani before. Our loss because this is the loveliest and most inspiring place we've stayed anywhere in Mexico during our many years of traveling and living here.
The family that runs this place couldn't be lovelier or more welcoming. They're deeply rooted in the community and know the arts, culture and cuisine. You can rely completely on their advice.
Once you enter the Posada you're in a high mountain tropical Garden of Eden, with lush vegetation, a koi pond and a lovely garden. You'll waken to birdsong - unless you sleep in, in which case the aroma of fresh coffee may summon you first. Breakfasts are excellent and are likely to be enriched by the sound of conversations of the owners with their clientele of multilingual, multicultural guests, many of whom are from Europe. Pátzcuaro tends to attract tourists who want to delve into and support the richness of indigenous Mexico. For them, as for us, Posada Yolihuani is the...
Read moreIn all our years of traveling, Posada Yolihuani was among the most charming hotels at which we've stayed. Its location, close to the main square, is extremely close to what tourists (especially those staying a short while) will want to see in Patzcuaro. The hotel itself is organized around a gorgeous courtyard garden with a small pond that is obviously maintained very diligently by someone who cares. The man with whom we interacted (the manager or owner, we assumed) was very welcoming, helpful, and hospitable. Our room was in very good condition and decorated appealingly--it was cozy in the best sense (and it stayed naturally cool, thanks to thick old stone construction), and its doors opened to the garden. The breakfast the next morning was simple but tasty and satisfying. We would very gladly stay there...
