Terrible service. We came for lunch as a family of four in the summer of 2023. We were on a cycling holiday and it was pouring down with rain. There was no logical place to leave the bikes close to the restaurant so we asked whether we could leave the bikes on the terrace (because who would want to sit there anyway when it’s pouring down with rain). The person that we spoke to said it was fine, so we parked our bikes and ordered our meals (of course if we would have been told to put our bikes elsewhere we would have done so. But after asking and getting approval, we assumed all was in order). All seemed fine until our food was placed on the table. Then a man (probably the owner) took my husband away from the table and told him he had to move the bikes. Of course by the time that was done, the kids and I had finished our meal and my husband’s food was cold. When I told a member of staff that I didn’t think this was dealt with in an appropriate manner I was told off. My husband was not offered fresh hot food, so he had to eat a cold meal (cold « kroketten with bread » isn’t really a treat). And in the end the man even shouted at us because we were such impossible customers. There was a couple at the table next to us that mentioned repeatedly to us that we were very friendly and constructive despite the bizarre treatment that we received. So this restaurant may look great from the outside, but if you’d like to be treated with respect (or if you enjoy to eat your meal together as a family) please go...

Our stay at Hotel De Fortuna in Edam, Netherlands, was nothing short of delightful. Nestled beside a picturesque canal in the heart of the historic town center, this boutique hotel offers a serene and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for unwinding. The location couldn’t be better—quiet, yet conveniently close to many tourist attractions.
The rooms are incredibly spacious and comfortable, with our suite offering a stunning view of the canal. It felt like we were on a movie set, with the charming surroundings adding to the magical experience. The hotel's restaurant is fantastic, with a wide range of choices that cater to different tastes. The morning buffet breakfast was unbelievably delicious and set the tone for our day.
Edam itself is a joy to explore. The historic town is walkable and safe, with many attractions within easy reach. We particularly enjoyed visiting the local cheese bazaar, which provided an authentic Dutch experience. Parking was hassle-free, with plenty of spaces available on the street.
We’ve stayed here twice and are already planning our third visit. April is the ideal time to go, as the tulip season transforms the nearby fields into vibrant, colorful carpets—a sight not to be missed. Renting a car is highly recommended to explore the surrounding areas at your own pace.
In summary, Hotel De Fortuna is the best location to stay in the Netherlands if you’re looking for charm, comfort, and a truly memorable...
Read moreThis hotel does not have parking or even luggage removal space. I had however anticipated this problem when booking by asking where my car could park. The hotel replied that 'parking in Edam is safe, easy and free. When you arrive we like to show where having a place to park '. The reality is quite different. Certainly, parking is probably safe and certainly free but it is difficult and even impossible. Along Suistraat where the hotel is located, all the available places are occupied by the cars of the local inhabitants. In my case, the hotelier had to move the large junk dumpster which occupied the only location without a car to make room for our car.|This is a shame because the hotel is located in a charming environment on the edge of a channel with a beautiful vegetation. The room is satisfactory. It has an electric kettle accompanied by a generous quantity of powdered coffee sticks and tea bags. A door opens onto a cagibi containing a wardrobe and a a trunk. There are abundance toiletries. The only downsides are the sink located in a corner of the room which lacks intimacy and the round table supposed to serve as a desk furniture which is fully occupied by the large collection of the rules applicable in the hotel. I had to put this collection on a bed to put my computer on the table.|In addition, at dinner, I was disappointed with the very hard lamb meat that I...
