Kawhia Motel — Hotel in North Island

Whaanau of 9 (7 adults 2 toddlers) booked into the Kawhia Motel (a weekend getaway) booked 2 family rooms.

4 of us including 1 toddler got put into room 7 next door to the office. First impressions stepping foot inside, a door the that had access from the office into the room, knowing these people have full access to the room even if guest aren't staying in it. Walk up a narrow dark stairway to the second floor to a bathroom that had wobbly tiles, a room that had roaches, a kitchen that had a dirty fridge with food in it( no milk aswell) as the freezer also had food in it, a pantry that had food in it. Dishes and cutlery that were dirty, rooms didn't feel clean at all, didn't even sleep in the bedding because we didn't feel comfortable sleeping in the sheets, we all stripped our beds and slept in our own blankets we brought. The railing to go up the stairway had massive gaps between each rail(NOT CHILD SAFE) This room was an absolute disgrace... disappointing to hear people actually live in this room and move out when they book it out to people DISGUSTING!!

The second room had the other 3 adults and other toddler in it. Kitchen wasn't clean, the bathroom felt dirty as well as the room, didn't feel like it had been vacuumed at all.

This place isn't even worth give a 1 star rating. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Kawhia itself is a beautiful place, this motel...

I recently stayed for one night at Kawhia motel, to say its a motel is misleading, a backpackers is cleaner and warmer. The rooms are cold - its the middle of winter and one blanket (summer on the bed which is as thick as a sheet) the heat pump doesn't go, it blows out cold air and they have a little heater which is not worth plugging in. I'm so glad I took my own blankets. The shower door didn't close neither did the windows because the latches were broken and it was 2 degrees outside. The place needs to be flatten and rebuilt the walls and ceiling have mould, no paint in some areas as it's peeling off the roof and walls. When I checked out I advised the receptionist of the issues to which she responded I could have got blankets off a spare bed, the windows didn't close because they need to be sprayed with oil - I told her how can you close them when there are no latches. Oh by the way the boss is fixing the heat pump! I gave them two for service because I did have a clean towel and sheets. For the prices they are charging it's not worth it. I wouldn't stay...

This one star is not for the rooms as we didn’t even stay in the hotel, but for what we experienced as guests. We booked one room in this hotel and arrived at 3pm, so one hour after the earliest check in time. There was nobody at the reception at all when we arrived, and we rang the bell several times without any luck. Then I called both numbers that were on the window of the reception, nobody answered. I also called the number given to me during reservation, it was some person that was not related to the hotel at all. We also asked some other guests, they said they didn’t see the owner for a while. After waiting over an hour doing all of this, we decided to just leave and go sleep somewhere else. I left many messages by phone and email, nobody ever answered back to us. Never saw that in my life, I would really recommend staying away...
