Birdsong Alley Bed and Breakfast — Hotel in South Island

Sometimes it's quite simple: if you visit the South Island, you have to visit Hanmer Springs. And if you visit Hanmer Springs, you have to stay at Birdsong Alley B&B with Rayone and Rhys.

Why is that? Simple: We all appreciate the perfect blend of hospitality and privacy. And the professionalism of the hosts paired with their incredible warmth. Few hosts have this ability, and Rayone and Rhys are definitely one of them. They welcomed us with open arms and immediately made us feel welcome. And at the same time they had a flair for leaving the right amount of space for us. From the very first second we knew we were in the right place and felt comfortable and at home. We had only planned to stay one night, but we immediately realized that we wanted to stay longer - and we did. The best decision we could have made! The room was perfectly and lovingly furnished, we had everything we needed. There was also a wonderful space on the terrace and a lovingly tended garden. The stay was characterized by the highest quality, but at the same time down-to-earth and not outlandish or lavish. We enjoyed a fantastic breakfast, including their wonderful company. And the evenings were a perfect mix of local events with our hosts (quiz night in the pub with the locals) and relaxed chat on the terrace over a beer. Not forgetting Rufus and Reeva, the two dogs that we immediately took in our hearts. And they seem to have taken to us too. We arrived as guests and left Birdsong Alley as friends!

OMG where to start, Rhys and Rayone are amazing hosts, after organizing a late check in and then arriving early they were so welcoming, the room is absolutely beautiful, so luxurious and warm. Hope you bring your appetite as breakfast is fantastic, caters to all dietary needs, Rayone makes GF mini muffins that are to die for and even sends you away with afternoon tea..... they never lasted that long! I cannot recommend this place highly enough. If you’re in Hamner, this place is a must to stay at. The hosts Rhys and Rayone were so accommodating, so friendly and their attention to detail was incredible. They made my wife and I feel right at home. Their dogs Rufus and Reeva were so cuddly and adorable and friendly. The rooms were warm, cosy and I’d go back just for the shower! One of the best showers I’ve had!
