Glenfern Villas — Hotel in South Island

This is one of our very favorite places we've now stayed on our honeymoon in New Zealand! We weren't expecting much. There aren't a ton of options when going to this glacier town, and our travel agent booked us here, and the only thing we knew about it was that it was listed as "economy" which meant it wasn't first-class and don't expect much. How wrong we were, it was incredible! We arrived right off the main road driving into town and right opposite the reception office was sheep and alpacas waiting for any of us to feed them, already we were excited! Free WiFi was offered, laundry machines were accessible, and then we saw our room...it was huge! A nice, large living room general area with tons of windows and glass doors to the green outdoors as well as good kitchen equipment, a good bathroom and a good bedroom with a very comfortable bed. Arrived at Glenfern villas late, in the dark having been tailgate for 12k on a narrow mountain pass by a lorry. We'd already been driving for nearly 4 hours and there was no safe place I could find to move over and let him pass. Arrived stressed and exhausted. It felt like this holiday of a lifetime was going to be a disaster ( having lost a day, and our passports at Heathrow and having to pay an extra £2000 to rearrange flights).|However, found out that none of the FranzJosef restaurants would deliver food that late in the evening, and certainly not deliver wine which resulted in a collapse in tears.|BUT, Lauren stepped in and not only recommended a brilliant restaurant but drove us there herself after her working day AND collected us from the Alice May and took us back to the villa. My wife and I were due to stop for one night on 23rd March on our way South to Queenstown. However Jacinda had other ideas and we ended up staying 3 and a half weeks! Kim and her staff could not have been kinder! The views are breathtaking and we managed to explore the lovely walks by way of daily exercise! Our chalet was very comfortable and we came to regard Glenfern as our home in New Zealand!
