This place is wonderful and the best value for money in Cambutal. It is a small hotel up on a hill overlooking Cambutal's forest, ocean and beach, without the sand flea and mosquito problems there are down by the beach. The rooms are simple but clean and tastefully decorated with a good shower in the private bathroom. The terrace has hammocks and tables to sit at where you can watch the view for hours. The hosts Andrés and María are lovely people who clearly love Cambutal and are doing their best to preserve the turtle life there as biologists involved in the turtle conservation project. This is an amazing thing well-worth supporting by going on a turtle patrol tour. Although it is called a "tour" it is not a touristy activity at all. You simply accompany that night's patrol group (which is run by local people) to check for turtles that have laid or are laying eggs, dig out the eggs and rebury them in the hatchery. We were able to see an Olive Ridley turtle laying its eggs, which is a fantastic thing to see. Unfortunately we also saw evidence of poaching, which is an all-too common reality in the area. We learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even with its bitter reality-check about humans' treatment...
Read moreWhat's lovely about Kambutaleko is that it's owned by John, a man who built the house from scratch, has been living in the area for 10 years, and his primary purpose of being there is being there. He moved to Cambutal to live a tranquil life away from the hustle and bustle of a big city and his lodge truly exudes that peaceful vibe. With only 6 rooms in all, you feel like you're at home, and John is someone you can spend hours talking to. He deeply cares about turtle conservation (Cambutal is a turtle nesting sanctuary) and truly cares about the local community benefiting from the tourism in the area, which makes you glad you picked his hotel over others that are owned by developers who only care about profits and not about protecting the area at all. Great food served for breakfast (lunch and dinner weren't available as it was off season) and great tips for all the local eatiers and surf spots. The property sits atop a hilll with sweeping views of the coast. From up there we even saw whales swimming in the distance! I will be...
Read moreIncredible view over the Ocean in a silent and nice hill just crossed the road. The rooms are big and there is a fan, just what we needed. I used to read Robinson Crusoe laying on one of their beautiful hammocks, and I really had the impression of leaving one of his moments. The owners are warm and kind, absolutely not invasive, as they live upstairs. The shyness of their daughter tells you all about this place. There's plenty of animals, plants, scents, and magnificent views. We will never forget sunsets views from Hotel...
