It is certain the physical structure of Gran Bolivar has seen better days, but the cleanliness, friendly & attentive staff and location make up for it - not to mention the very reasonable price. If you don't speak Spanish & haven't traveled in South America before, you will likely be disappointed or frustrated with your stay here. But, if you are looking for a centrally located, simple, inexpensive, clean & well-staffed hotel - with a gym & free wifi, the Gran Bolivar is an excellent value. ||||We stayed here for 4 nights in a spacious corner suite with a terrace (overlooking mostly the corrugated metal rooftops, roof top water tanks & laundry lines - but also a gorgeous view of the sacred mountain & star-studded sky). There were several crickets that tried to get in through the terrace door, but we soon figured out that if we dimmed the lights at night they were less likely to find their way in. Small inconveniences in the grandeur of life. ||||The bed was spacious, comfortable & all sheets, blankets & towels were spotless. The staff (desk, bellhop, cleaning) were all friendly (though somewhat reserved, typical for Peru - which you will learn as you spend more time in this beautiful & varied country) & helpful with setting up tours & giving us tips for getting around & eating out. We took advantage of the small gym in the basement, were delighted to have free wifi (though if you need a lot of bandwidth you may be disappointed from time to time), and the breakfast each morning was a plentiful buffet, delicious & staffed by a friendly staff. Peruvians work 12-14 hour days (sometimes more) - the staff that prepares breakfast is often starting around 4:00 or 5:00 am after working late into the evening the previous day. ||||¡Muchísimas gracias a todos del Gran Bolivar por hacer nuestra experiencia en Trujillo tan acogedor! Les enviamos saludos y deseos por continuo éxito - esperamos que muchos más tengan tan buena experiencia en quedarse en su...
Read moreThe hotel is difficult to judge, or perhaps Im struggling with the review because it has good things and things that are not so good. Lets see....we stayed here in part because we believed it was close to the Plaza de Armas and in a way it is but in other ways it isnt. I read on here its 4 blocks but that cant be right as its more like 8 blocks. At night, the streets that lead up to the Plaza are rather lonely so it makes you think a bit about walking the entire distance. The hotel from the outside looks interesting, it looks like an old colonial building but once you get inside the rooms you realize the rooms need some upgrading, remodeling, whatever you want to call it. The night we arrived, as soon as I we got in it you could smell some kind of humidity which is odd considering Trujilo is really really dry. The room looked nice but it also looked like it needed a little love. There are some constructions inside which try to look modern but it just makes the place look strange, breakfast is served in 'the basement' and its pretty simple. The staff is helpful and friendly.||||I dont think Id stay here...
Read moreFirst of all: We are not the people who complain about nothing; on the contrary. We are very flexible, tolerant and always try to see the positive things, especially before judging something or someone.||Power outlets next to the bed came out of the wall when trying to plug in a charging cable. Electric cables were not connected properly and almost caused an electric shock.||Water was not even lukewarm and internet connection did not work until the second day of our stay at 10 pm, when the staff fixed it supposedly.||When we asked for a discount on our bill, the staff offered us 10 soles, about 3 USD. When we told them, that we were going to mention the shortcomings in our review, not even this ridiculously small...
