As someone who travels a lot I have a policy of reserving 5 stars for special occasions.
Sugar lounge is 5 star for a bunch of reasons you might not expect.
Isolated but not to a fault. Being up at the far end of the beach it's an incredibly quiet peaceful place with a bit more activity just a short walk down the beautiful beaches
Low tech and highly tuned. Beat (swiss owner) and his staff have crafted a very intentional natural space. Common areas are sand floored including the bar and entertainment area and the whole resort can be walked barefoot. Cabins however have a footwash station and private gated patio with a couch and hammock standard. It all works.. with the openable front wall on the cabin it just totally comes together as an indoor/outdoor space
Bug nets over the beds. Small touches but helps you really fall asleep without additional worry. A nice big fan in the corner keeps the room very cool and comfortable all night. (Note.. no AC and I loved it.. )
The Beach - flawless beaches 10m in front of the resort through a healthy butress of palm and other trees keeping the shoreline healthy and maintained. Safe and swimmable. Shallow out for 50 feet or more.
Service - on point. Scheduled hours to order very nice meals off a menu. The 2 egg breakfast with fresh bread and smoked bacon was my staple. Staff are always around and able to help. The owner is quick to offer advice and recommendations.
Bonus 6 - The real secret - one of the cheapest places on the beach ⛱️ Beat (bee - at) believes in keeping his natural resort accesible and friendly to all types of travellers.
Highly recommended.
(Ps. Ignore previous reviews about a boat and time constraints on access. There was a full access road built a number of years ago and the resort is about 50m walk from the shared...
Read moreSugar Lounge is a wonderful place to stay. The cabins are really beautifully made. Everything is open so your outside in nature all the time, which is lovely in these gorgeous surroundings. It still felt private, and also there's the possibility to close the cabin through cool bamboo constructions, so no worries about privacy. This place is a hidden gem, be aware that there is not a lot to do, which is actually amazing. You can sink into a calmness being surrounded by stunning beach with not too many people. Most tourists there were Filipinos. The food is prepared with love & fresh ingredients, and very tasty. Beat & the team were kind & accommodating. We had amazing talks and really enjoyed our time here. The cabins don't have airco, but even though it was extremely hot during our stay, the nights were still nice and cool because the cabin is so open.
Furthermore the bed is good, shower has a proper jet, there's a comfortable deck to chill. Aestheticly very...
Read moreThis place offers quiet and simple comfort for its guests. Our small cabin featured Filipino-style windows (no glass) with covers that can be manually propped open when necessary. The bed had a mosquito net, which was nice. No A/C so nights can get a bit stuffy. We liked the separate lockable room cabinet for storing our valuables. Shower did not have hot water but that was ok. We tried the curry chicken and it was excellent. Breakfast meals were also quite good. The onsite bar is frequented by many interesting local foreigners at night. I can't say enough about staff members Annalyn, Mary and Shy. These ladies were full of positive energy and incredibly kind. Annalyn walked with us for several kilometers in the blazing afternoon heat to explain how to move our motorbike from a neighboring resort to Sugar Lounge. Now that is great service! Mary is a wonderfully skilled chef and Shy makes an incredible long island ice tea. Thank you so much Sugar...
