Thanks to Mountain Eco Shelter, we had an amazing holiday. Beautiful bungalows with privacy located in an ecological park, where you can pet donkeys and watch fish.
Our host, Mr. Dioclécio, was a very kind and helpful man who told us everything about the accommodation, the bar (which is located in the park – highly recommend visiting), and also shared information about the locals, landmarks, and places worth exploring. He even helped us arrange a canyoning trip, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience.
The location is excellent – you're about 10 minutes above Funchal, and if you have a car, you can reach Gato Legal coffee roastery (on the westernmost part of the island) in about an hour.
After every day trip, you’ll be happy to return to this place, as it offers peace and tranquility – something you’ll truly appreciate after a full day of hiking.
Also, if you're planning to hike to Pico Ruivo, you're located right below Pico do Areeiro, which you can reach in under 3 hours on foot – and without following the crowded tourist path.

The shelter was way better equipped than we expected: proper AC, a killer waterfall shower, real coffee machine, big fridge with freezer, and super comfy bed and pillows. Mobile signal was totally fine too.
Only gripe? The bathroom light switch setup is weirdly complicated. But honestly, that’s just a minor quirk in an otherwise perfect stay.
Would 100% come back to recharge and...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing! This was our homebase for two weeks, longer than most other guests. We wanted to stay off the grid and somewhere peaceful. This place is truly the definition of quiet. Just nature and of course, the donkeys. Our host Dioclecio made us feel at home and communication was easy. We like roadtrips so having to drive to different parts of the island didn’t bother us.
The Forest Bar down the hill serves great food and drinks. Mountain Eco Shelters is a gem and we highly recommend this place above everything else. Would rebook it...
