Forest Food & Coffee — Restaurant in Funchal

Unfortunately, our experiences at this restaurant were disappointing. On both visits, we were not greeted upon entering.

On one occasion, a staff member accidentally spilled coffee. She did apologize, but no one came to clean it up — we had to take care of it ourselves. She also forgot to bring the cake we had ordered.

On another day, we arrived at 5:20 p.m., and although the restaurant officially closes at 6:00 p.m., we were met with unfriendly looks and told the kitchen was already closed. Again, the atmosphere made us feel unwelcome.

What a lovely morning up in the mountains above Funchal, only 25mins from the city center. We followed the stream up into the foggy hills full of blooming flowers to a small waterfall, an ideal quiet place to think. On the way down we said hi to the donkeys and were met by the perfect ending— lunch at O Barracão! Inside this family run cozy rustic cabin with chill music you can get some delicious steak sandwiches and drinks, and on Friday’s and Saturday’s they have live music. Visited on Friday without a booking - no problem at all. Cosy evening atmosphere, log fire burning, warm lighting and variety of seating (booths, benches with or without cushions, pretty tables and stools - tables available both inside and outside). Service was attentive, very friendly and helpful. Lovely staff members were sincere and professional but relaxed and cool. Great place to share some small plates, or have your own. Fresh and tasty, with a good variety of local dishes available. Very good value, particularly for a fairly remote location. Poncha Pescador was delicious, as well as the stout beer.
