Peniche Surf Lodge is the place to go if you are interested in a proper surf experience. The family who run it, Duncan, Claire and Dane, run it with incredible passion and attention to detail. They go the extra mile to ensure that each guest gets the most out of their time there.
An average day will be wake up around 9. There is a supermarket nearby to go buy breakfast and water for the day. At 10am, Duncan arrives to the lodge to pick up anyone surfing that day. Everyone is loaded into a beautiful white van with surfs and wetsuits.
The surf spots are always selected to give you the best waves. We went to Baleal beach all 3 days. The beaches there are still natural and you have waves often only to yourself. You can surf up to 8 hours during the day. The lessons by Dane are incredible value for money compared to the normal surf classes in other hostels in Portugal. We had a lesson of 4 and Dane gave us loads of tips on our technique and then helped us catch the perfect wave. Plus a two hour lesson is only €20 on top of the surf and wetsuit rental. For the rest of the time we just surfed without lessons and really enjoyed that too.
There are loads of nice lunch places in Baleal and a sandwich or toast is about €4. Little things also get done by Duncan and Claire to make your surfing experience the best. At the start, a structure gets set up to protect you from the wind after you come out the water, and this gets filled with towels and cushions for you to rest between surfs. Free coffee and biscuits (and potentially homemade Banana cake if you are v lucky) are brought by Duncan and Claire who come join you at the beach around 3/4pm. They normally take you back to the Lodge around 6pm.
Evenings are what you make of them. We found Peniche itself very quiet but we found a couple of really nice bars on the Baleal beach including Daneau Beach Bar which is a really fun club. Shots are €3 and it gets packed with young people around midnight until 3-4am.
There are loads of nice restaurants in Peniche for dinner and you eat really well with €20 a head. We fell in love with Tasca do Joel that is the best restaurant in the region and expensive comparative to other restaurants but one of best dining experience we’ve had.
The atmosphere in the Lodge is always very warm and Duncan and Claire make a real effort to ensure everyone feels included. The accommodation is very clean and the beds are super comfy. Overall great value for money and we will definitely be back in March for the Surf Competition. Thanks Duncan, Claire and Dane for the incredible hospitality, all the best, Davide...
Read moreDuncan and Claire along w/their son run a 1st rate operation! Feels more like visiting close friends than a random surf lodge. It’s been a couple years since my last stay but feels like I haven’t missed a beat. The accommodations are very competitively priced, clean, and are located in the middle of everything w/ocean views from our comfortable bed. WiFi is amazing for work purposes, (my girlfriend was stoked to be able to manage her work accounts from our bedroom w/an incredible ocean view). I’m happy to be able to leave her comfortably while I surf fun waves nearby. Lots of delicious little restaurants have sprung up too since my last visit. I look forward to coming here w/friends and family for years to come. I’m sure you will too! :-) Don’t forget me Claire and Duncan, I call dibs on our room for...

I was travelling alone from Australia solely looking to surf at an advanced level for a few days. Dane & Duncan have the surf knowledge and skills nailed (have been travelling /living/ surfing there for many many years) , plus had the perfect board selections too for my level (groveller to high performances boards) - Note they also have great lessons for beginners .
My selling point was getting picked up everyday and driven to the surf + the intimate living arrangements in the hostel (house).
Claire was also amazing and very good on communication.
Easy no brainer if you’re a surfer travelling with no equipment and no surf knowledge of the area.
I know where I’m staying next time .
Legends, cheers...
