Beaufort West was the start of a week’s birding trip, led by Ralie and Gita Claassen of Karoo Birding Safaris, who had booked me at La Paix (“the peace” – and it was) for the night. || Doreen welcomed me and when I commented on the smoke smell left by a previous guest who had clearly ignored the ‘no smoking’ signs (they need to watch this), she promptly moved me to a front twin-bedded room. Not exactly self-catering, there is a microwave so you can nuke a takeaway meal or, by prior arrangement, they will provide you with an evening meal. || The winter sheets and electric blanket are a prerequisite in the Karoo. We received a warm welcome on arrival from Nicky, a very competent receptionist.|| The weather was rather cold. Nicky offered us tea and coffee which was very welcome. Road tripping from CPT to Sun City we made this our 1st overnighter of 2 here and was pleasantly surprised at the value for money and comfort we found at La Paix. When you have a holiday coming up you don't want to spend your money before you get to your destination and we didn't have to spend much here.
