Disappointing. Overpriced and terribly run. The entrance of the guesthouse correlates with the four stars, but everything else doesn’t. Whoever gave them the four stars clearly wasn’t there at night to witness the lack of management. No night management staff and the night management staff were friendly enough to make dinner but when we were about to leave she insisted we give her money and she said If we don’t have any she will follow us to the room so we can find some. I was going to give a tip but with that it felt uncomfortable. I ended up giving them R60 because they kept coming back and making it very uncomfortable. The bathrooms were dismal- my friends bathroom was dirty and smelly. The bath was broken. My bathroom was dirty and the shower didn’t have a shower head nor any control of the temperature. The day management is as unwilling to take responsibility as the night staff and when we complained they said oh we haven’t redone those rooms yet, yet they charge four star prices for a room that is in such a state. She said they would get someone to ensure the bathrooms looked better, but as management they should actually be checking that the rooms are up to Standard before handing over to guests. The stains in the toilets are from years of neglect and the condition of the bathroom is also lack of proper management. All the staff lack listening skills and interrupt you when you are trying to talk and come up with lousy excuses to not take responsibility. I phoned to ask if maybe they had found something I may have left in the room and the night staff immediately became defensive and said it’s not her responsibility and I must call the person who is on duty in the morning because it’s not her responsibility and she doesn’t know anything. The whole situation was frustrating and I got quite frustrated because a four star guest house surely should not be this badly run. When I asked if there was a manager on duty she said no- so if anything happens on the property at night it’s no one’s responsibility, and you have no support. When asking for the name of the receptionist she threatened to record the call- which I really am happy about because it’s just evidence that there is no night staff taking responsibility for anything and also her just delivering the worst service ever. She put down the phone in my ear too. I am taking this to the tourism board to reevaluate the place and look into this because this is not on. Their pictures are super edited and look like either they were taken in the hey-day of...
Read moreFood was sub-par. Breakfast did not include filter coffee, and when we asked why, we were told that they did not have filter coffee in Beaufort West. The colleagues that were staying in the next door Beaufort Manor reported that they had enjoyed filter coffee for breakfast, and the two establishments are under the same ownership.
I attempted to cancel my dinner for the one evening at 11h30 in the morning, and was told that I couldn't because they had started cooking dinner. When I approached Gail about this, we worked out an arrangement where dinner would be given to our party on departure as dinner had already been charged to the company card. On departing, I was informed by Lionel that they had given all the food parcels to a member of our party, who had left earlier, and I was later told by another colleague that Lionel had called after we had already departed for Cape Town saying that the food parcels were still at Matoppo Inn. This all seems too convenient to me, and I doubt that the food was ever prepared in the first place. I sincerely hope that they do not charge for this food!
Lastly, I bought my own water and milk, and when I returned to my room after housekeeping had been, they had decided not to replenish the complementary milk and water for my room. Again, I felt that Matoppo Inn was trying to cut every possible corner on service to our group so that they could maximise their profit. The services was well below four stars, and probably more in line with a two star establishment, as filter coffee is a standard at breakfasts of most three star establishments.
I would advise against using Matoppo Inn, and will certainly remember the poor service we received when I coordinate future workshops in...
Read moreMy colleagues and I have stayed at Matoppo Inn multiple times while in Beaufort West on business. We have always enjoyed our stay at the guest house and will gladly return in future. The central location is ideal, as the guest house is within walking distance of the historical landmarks/museums that this small town boasts with. The guest house itself also notably boasts with rich history, as it is one of the earliest establishments in town. At the end of the day you can relax in the lush gardens that offer a serene escape or in a comfortable room equipped with all the necessities. The dinner meals are delicious and the service is amazing and we have especially appreciated Landi who goes the extra mile. I recommend a stay at this...
