We -- like several of our fellow guests -- booked our safari through Viatour which meant that we did not know exactly which of the lodges handled by Viatour we would stay in ... until we actually arrived at Kholiwe Lodge on Kruger. More transparency in the process would have been preferred. ||We came to see the animals and the actual safari experience in Kruger Park exceeded our expectations! The safari guide, Aubrey, who works under contract with the Lodge was excellent. A former National Park Ranger, he knew where and when to find the animals! ||As for the Lodge itself: it was clean and It comfortable; the food simple but adequate; the staff friendly and hospitable. But it was not "luxury" as advertised! Rather, it qualifies more as a "homestay" -- a private residence converted into a seasonal guest house. The owners of the Lodge might consider the following suggestions for improving the standard of its operation. For example, there was no where to hang or place clothes; the bath accessories consisted of an unlabeled squirt bottle containing some unknown soap/shampoo and a small bar of soap; there was only one small towel rack for our 4 towels. There were no meal choices or options offered, especially difficult for vegetarians. Cheese and tomato sandwiches with fries for lunch is not a meal. There were no napkins for the dining table; instead we were given a roll of paper towels and "refreshing wipes." ||And, for some unexplained reason, the door between our guest room and the lobby/dining/sitting area of the Lodge was locked and the key initially refused to us -- until we insisted on having it. Oddly, our room and the other three guest rooms all had to be accessed from outside the Lodge and not from the lobby area. One had to exit the lobby area onto the pool area or the front yard and then enter one's room through a sliding glass door. At night, when the staff departed, the front and back doors of the lobby/kitchen area were locked and guests had no access to the lobby/sitting/dining area. The staff was unable to explain why the Lodge owner did not want guests to be able to use the inside door which opened into the lobby/dining/sitting area, just a...

Read moreOur stay at the Kholiwe for three days in November 2023 was awesome! The staff were great. Especially Precious and Swazi. They went to the store to get a bottle of wine we wanted and set up special meal areas for us. One was a candlelight dinner in front of the pool. The other was a candlelight dinner around a fire pit. In addition, we had three meals each day that were prepared personally by Precious. The food was so good that I finished all of my meals. However, I am now paying for over eating because I gained extra weight that I am now working towards losing. The atmosphere was wonderful and the room was clean and big and had a view of the pool. It was also nice and quiet. Not having a TV in our rooms allowed us to spend our time together as a family. We went to Kruger National Park each day and saw a lot of animals. We also ate together, talked, and went swimming. I would definitely recommend staying at...
