Once you're inside Hermanus Beach Club, it's not bad, but getting there takes you through Hermanus' squatter camp. So, be forewarned. If you're driving through the squatter camp, then you're going in the right direction.
Once I was through the squatter camp on the evening that I arrived at Hermanus Beach Club, I didn't feel like leaving to get some groceries, so I decided to see what the convenience store offered. I was quite disappointed that it was such a small and sparsely equipped shop.
There is a club house with a bar, a kiddies play area, a nice pool area and a decent looking putt-putt course. This is in the same building that houses the convenience store. In the kiddies play area there is a vending machine containing snacks. At the time that I was there, the vending machine wasn't operational in that you weren't able to select an item to purchase.
The unit that I was in was okay, but the upkeep leaves a bit to be desired.
Floors weren't sweeped or washed, so walking barefoot would leave you feeling like you're walking on the beach or with very dirty feet. Wardrobes didn't close properly because of rusted hinges. The wardrobe shelves and doors have also seen better days. The unit contained 3 bedrooms, 2 of which contained double beds. When I had to go to the sleep in the evening, I found the mattress on the bed in the main bedroom to be very old and sad. I ended up spending the weekend sleeping on the double bed in the other room. The main bedroom's mattress need to be replaced. In the kitchen, the cutlery was mismatched. Dishes wasn't washed cleanly. After the first time that the cleaning staff was there, the first few plates and bowls that I picked up still had bits of food stuck to it.
Due to the aforementioned area that had to be driven through, I spent more time in the unit than I probably intended. I tried watching some TV, but found that the DSTV offering wasn't the same as other such establishments, so there wasn't much to watch. Also, the satellite signal strengths weren't great so internet was shoddy. The only way you could really get stable internet (I think) was from buying overpriced WiFi bundles from the office.
I had a second weekend booked at the same place, but after the first weekend, I ended up rather staying home for the...
Read moreHermanus Beach Club is the perfect spot to stay while you are in Hermanus. It has everything you need including swimming pools, tennis and squash courts, a putt-putt (mini-golf) course, a bar and kiosk, a gym and more, making this perfect for groups of different ages as well as families. Most of the houses and apartments are privately owned and rented out, ensuring you will find accommodation within your price range, with the most expensive options being right on the beachfront. There are big open lawns where you can relax, as well as a walking path along the coast. Most of the coastline is smooth rocks, but there are small "beach" like areas where the kids can also play. The resort is very well managed and clean, and all the staff is friendly and helpful. It is important to note that there is an informal settlement right behind the resort, which is not ideal, but the resort itself is very safe - it's surrounded by electric fencing and cameras, and there are security guards on premises 24/7. We had such a great time staying here, hearing the ocean every evening while you sleep and waking up every morning with the beautiful waves (some of the biggest I have ever seen). We were also fortunate enough to see some whales from our stoep, and I have heard that some people have also spotted schools of dolphins pass by. My next trip to Hermanus I will definitely be...
Read moreDespite the name, there is no beach here, just a seaview that's mainly blocked by the longer term residents/vaction house owners that live there. The closest actual beach is about a 10 or so mintue drive away.
The games room is very old, sort of looks like an old school arcade with very little for these new aged kiddies to do. Every game is purchased tokens operated. The outside jungle gym is built for one or two toddlers at best and the pool is fit for just about 3 familys at a time with a maximum occupancy of 16 people and 8 during covid. Essentially there's very little for the family to indoors in the club itself.
The club is also built right across the street from an informal settlement which seems like a very insensitive thing to do. I do hope that some proceeds of this place are used to uplift this community because the stark contrast of South Africa's inequality problem was very evident during our stay.
The lodging itself was actually nice, the kitchen was great, every essential thing you'd need. There's no air conditioner though and I'd suggest bringing extension plugs, all the bedroom plugs were...
