The Gecko Bar & Restaurant — Restaurant in Overstrand Local Municipality

What was suppose to be a festive first 2021 dinner, turned into a disappointing experience. I ordered calamari and my travelling partner ordered hake. I was served squid and the hake turned up scorched prepared in previously used oil. I discussed our complaints with our waiter Rudi's. Lacking customer service skills, he verbally attacked me. He advised me to google the difference between calamari and squid. Making matters worse he insulted me adding that I am frustrated because I can not order liquor. According to Rudi I don't know the difference between calamari and squid, since I am from the Free State. He on the other hand is well experienced, since he has been in the trade for 11 years. I have never been so himuliated in a restaurant in my entire life. Since I am in the hospitaly industry I will never employ Rudi, neither will I advise anyone to attempt eating out at the Gecko Restaurant...

Went to watch rugby. Great location, spectacular views of the harbour and bay, even saw a whale. Service friendly and efficient, pizzas were excellent, but we were blown away in a bad way by the wine prices. R210 for the cheapest bottle of white wine!! Come on, it was a nice wine, but R210 in a bar!! Offered at R60 a glass!! Why no decent house wines? There are so many vineyards in the area that would fall over themselves to get their wines listed. If you need any help we could suggest some. It would be really interesting to know how many bottles of the top end wines are sold, these range from the R600 mark. While we were there, we were the only people drinking wine which, at those prices, is not surprising. We would go back for the views and the food, but definitely not...

You have to order your food and drinks at the bar and it turns out being your own waiter for a table of 5 is kinda annoying. The place wasn’t even busy and our food took an hour to arrive. We didn’t get cutlery beforehand so we had to ask for it after. One of my sushi orders was straight up missing too. So, that’s why the service is an easy 1.

The food was bang average. I’m typing this review at the restaurant straight after my meal and I already forgot what I ate.

The atmosphere was hard carried by the sunset - the sun needs to see a chiropractor. But otherwise it wasn’t that great inside the restaurant either as we ended up basically sitting in the dark as our table just didn’t get much lighting coverage.

Overall, pretty trash and I wouldn’t recommend going...
