We had a lovely weekend here. 4 Adults and 3 Children. We booked the stone house (which was lovely and cool on hot days) , a tent with ensuite "bathroom" and one 3 sleeper tent. They were all clean and comfortable with made up beds and electricity and a lamp inside This is basic backpacker accomodation but good value for the price considering everything else in the area is a lot more expensive. We chose this as the children really wanted to visit the onsite Pixie and Fairy garden (which is pretty awesome and magical if you like that kind of thing).
They charge a nominal entry fee and because we stayed there we could just pop in any time which was fun as the children wanted to see if the fairies "moved" over night.
You can however just visit the fairy shop or succulent nursery - it looks like you have to pay once you go through the gate but that is only for the fairy garden which is through another door and completely hidden out of sight)
The grounds are very rustic and bohemian with lots of nooks and crannies for kids to explore and lots of spots for a braai or a huge bonfire if it is cold.
There are also lots of picnic tables to sit at as well as an indoor braai/bar area for rainy weather.
There is a slide and climbing frame which the children loved. There is a little splash pool that they will fill up for you for a fee (R250 when we went) but if you do that ask them early morning already as it takes a while and the water is cold so it would work best done early on a very hot day I reckon.
The staff are all very friendly and Hester the receptionist were very helpful and quickly sorted out a few minor issues we had.
There is a big communal kitchen with two large fridges and freezers, a gas stove, microwave and kettle as well as lots of pots and pans. You still need to bring bits - I would suggest definitely bring own mugs and cutlery and dishcloths and dishtowels. We took our own airfryer which worked well. There is a deli and a well stocked "cornershop" and a lovely restaurant just a short walk from there - there is also another nice restaurant 5 min drive next to the beach so you don't have to cook plus Checkers sixty60 delivers there. The grounds are quite dark at night but there are lights that can be switched on around the property so just ask them to show you where all the switches are. There were also (at the time of our stay) a few friends of the owner who lives there permanently and they were very friendly and helpful. We saw a few small scorpions at night so best to wear shoes at night time (it is the West Coast so it comes with the territory). So overall we would recommend if you enjoy camping/glamping and outdoor fun, it is really a lovely setting with lovely people and lots to...
Read moreThis backpacker left us with a bitter taste. First of all, it was the priciest backpacker we'd seen in ZA (200R per dorm, in low season). We didn't have a lot of options (the other backpacker was full) so we decided to take two beds.Apparently they had a nice "Pixie & Fairy Village/garden" accessible, but we had to pay an extra 30R to visit (which we did not want to pay). I would have expected it to be included in the price of the accommodation. But well…||||We arrived in the middle of the afternoon and, right after paying, the reception closed and the staff was nowhere to be found.||||At some point, we decided to start cooking our dinner (with another couple) and someone finally came to check on us. It seemed to be the owners. Great! The woman asked if everything was alright but didn't even care to listen to any of our answers. She preferred to strongly insist on the fact that the place was safe: when you don't initially feel threatened, this kind of behavior makes you wonder what is there to fear…||||Once we finished eating, the lights in the courtyard never went on and we had to walk back to our room with our smartphones. Maybe we didn't pay the option "garden lightens at night"...||||To finish on a positive note though, we had a room of 6 for ourselves and...
Read moreWe found mice in our tent living in the pillows. The duvet and pillows was full of mice droppings. The tent felt like it has not been cleaned or lived in for months. The bedding and matrass was full of dust and I suspect bed bugs because we were itching the whole night. I am allergic to dust mites and developed terrible hay fever through the night so I suspect there are dust mites as well. Because of this we had to keep the tent flaps open through the night which was a bit terrifying. There were far too few ablution blocks. Other guests kept us awake till 2 in the morning cursing loudly and acting very drunk, including the owner/ head employee of the facility. The kitchen did not have enough crockery and cutlery for everyone and...
