Overall, we enjoyed our stay in the Simonsberg cottage, a recently refurbished accommodation right next to the estate’s main building. The room itself was clean and well-appointed. Included in the price was a wine and cheese tasting which we enjoyed a lot. Lola and her team were friendly, and we loved the presence of several dogs, especially Arthur, the Irish Wolfshound.

Three things hold us back from giving the fifth star, though:

  1. The cottage is located next to the parking lot, with material and workers around. Not a nice view, and not a lot of privacy either. This wasn’t reflected on the booking sites. From a vineyard accommodation we had expected a more idyllic setting.
  2. The included breakfast was very frugal. Compared to other accommodations on our trips through South Africa, it was definitely on the lower end.
  3. The biggest drawback was the condition of the sheets and pillows, with multiple stains throughout. When we discovered this late in the evening, it was already too late to reach somebody and request a change. We could have done with one or two washed-in spots, but it really was beyond an acceptable level.

However, four stars for the overall stay experience. With more transparency about the location and views, more love for the breakfast and a better cleanliness of the linens this place can surely go five stars...

The winery is beautifully located at the Simonsberg. We had a very nice tasting. It is rather small and very personal and not the mass event like in many other wineries. The idea of having cheese as a teaser for the different wines is really funny. They should still provide water and bread as standard. But that was available upon request. The tour through the wines was given by a beginner and not very professional, but it was very kind & friendly. Anyway, I prefer it if the products don't have to be advertised but rather speak for themselves. And the Wines from Mitres Edge were really good !Unfortunately we couldn't take that much with us on the plane and you can't order...

A boutique winery that specialises in single varietal red wines and a very good unwooded crisp viognier. A family business, grapes are handpicked, sorted and the beautiful bottles are labeled by hand. 2015 and 2016 vintages on sale now. Complex and smooth. The price reflects the craftsmanship and quality. High rated by John Platter and many prestigious awards.

The cellar is charming and the tasting room is a gracious dining room. Prebook a cheese and wine pairing with their winemaker. Small groups can also have a simple but delicious lunch. Worth a visit. Beware it is a little tricky to locate as signage on the farm is not clear. Call them if...
