Popped by for dinner at Mez on the recommendation of some locals and what a gastronomic delight.

Everything from the welcome at the door by Kyle, to the beautiful decor, and down to every delicious morsel was like being in another time and place. I really appreciated the thought and art behind the space and food. Michelle and her team have crafted a gem in the Karoo where as soon as you step into the restaurant you feel a merging of all the places that inspire the dishes - Mediterannean, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Italian and not forgetting the local Cape Malay traditions.

Not a fan of courgettes so decided to be adventurous and try the fritters. Excellent and perfect balance of the cheese and courgette, a bonus that it was Gluten Free.

Tried the Malay Curry and the lamb was cooked perfectly, paired with home-made chutney. Whilst the veggies were meant to be a side, they were flavoured just right to star on their own.

I have been on many travels outside SA and only one other dining experience in India rivals the treat that was Mez.

Definitely heading back for more! A must on your visit to or stop through the...

Update November 2023

This is one of the best restaurants in South Africa.

Consistently, amazing service, high quality food, great selection. All at a reasonable price. The decor is a mix between rustic and Mediterranean. Artwork on the walls includes pieces from the owner.

Mez in Barrydale is worth the visit.

Prior visits.

A wonderful dining experience.

Menu offers wonderful choices. The food tastes incredible.

Save room for desert as it is incredible.

This is the place to eat in Barrydale.

Update March 2023

Went with friends to a private event dinner the other night.

Michelle and her wonderful team created a wonderful evening with a four course meal. Every aspect of the evening was wonderful. Service by Kyle was great as always. The setting of the restaurant is comfortable with beautiful local art. The food is top notch in terms of taste, freshness and the combinations.

I love this restaurant and dining experience. Thank you...

I transferred this review from my Tripadvisor feed from 2015. I believe Mez is going strong and Michelle has extended her outside dining area. Hoping to visit them again soon

Not your average franchise restaurant...

We visited Mez Karoo on the strength of the other TripAdvisor reviews. We booked in advance and took our own wine (Joubert-Tradauw's excellent R62) as suggested by others. Our experience was exactly as we expected. A small intimate restaurant in Michelle Berry's house with funky Mediterranean / Moroccan cuisine. The menu is small but sufficient and the ambiance and food is excellent. Michelle and her staff is doing a great job of making Mez a unique dining experience. Don't be mislead by the attached photo of the empty tables as we arrived early. The dining room was packed within 30 minutes of our arrival. Make sure to book for dinner over weekends - a few couples had to be turned away on the night we visited....

What a superb little gem located in the heart of Barrydale. Our waiter had a great knowledge of the menu and the wine on offer. Every option on the menu was inviting. As a table of 4 we were lucky to be able to order the 4 mains on offer and share between us. The menu was diverse and every dish that we ordered was sensational. Delicates flavours that danced together in the palette. Not overly spiced or flavoured. A definite must try for any hungry foodie.
