We stayed for a week in mid-September. The room was a good size and clean, with two single beds pushed together. It had air conditioning, and a large shower room. No fridge or tea/coffee-making facilities. For the first 4 days I think we were the only residents. Mind, there are only about 8 rooms, arranged in a circle (the hotel is sort of octagonal), all on the first floor, accessed by stairs (my wife coped fine with the stairs despite being on crutches following a fractured foot just prior to our holiday!). Probably quiet because it was the end of the Summer season. Some days the hotel was closed, so we had to ring the doorbell to gain access. However, our host confirmed that we could come and go as we pleased, and order drinks at any time. He was very pleasant and spoke limited English. Some days he was out making wine, so his wife served breakfast. His wife didn't speak English, so it was an excellent opportunity to practice our very limited Spanish - worth learning a few words relating to breakfast! Breakfast was perfectly ok, more of a continental one, with no cooked food (other than toast). We didn't eat there in the evening, but I have heard that the food is good. Wi-Fi worked well in our room. Relatively small parking area behind the hotel, with a steep entrance, but soon got the hang of it, and always space to park. When you drive into the village, the hotel is immediately on the left, with the carpark entrance opposite the Taxi rank, and a Sabadell bank with cashpoint on the right. There is a small supermarket nearby – just yards away. If you manage to miss the hotel, like we did, I suggest driving straight ahead then turning right by the bar L'estufa to circle back to the hotel. If you turn left at the bank, you will go up the hill and find yourself on some narrow roads through the village. Just beyond the bank is a bar/meeting hall. The locals meet here first thing in the morning before going to work. Half-way down the hall on the left is the entrance to the terrace where you can sit and sip your wine/beer with the mountains as a backdrop. Beer here is 1.30 euros for “una cana” (tip: don't ask for una cerveza, and don't ask for a large beer because it will warm up before you get to the end. Una cana (oona can-yah) or dos/tres/cuatro canas (can-yass) will get you a (or 2,3 or 4) small cold draught beer(s) - it can be just 200mls at the coast, but in this bar you get approx 330mls for your 1.30! Up the road is L'estufa bar – a pleasant bar, with a terrace (but no views), a good range of drinks, menu of the day and tapas (closed Mondays). Una cana here is still reasonably priced at 1.50 euros. (Tip: when eating out, it seems the “menu” refers to the menu of the day, if you want alternative dishes, ask for “la carta”. Menus of the day are well priced, and usually include a drink, bread with aioli, starter – can be as big as a main course! - main course and dessert). There is a terrace by the supermarket where you can order coffee, etc, and further along that road on the right are a couple of restaurants within a short walk of the hotel. A little further along this road by car (CV715) is a right turn to La Piscina Restaurant – they do a great menu of the day (menu del dia). Parcent is a pleasant village, worth exploring – on foot. Do explore the surrounding villages too – Jalon has a Saturday market. It takes about 25 minutes to drive to Javea - plenty of free parking off-road on the beach side between Arenal and the Port. If you want to swim, there is an indoor swimming pool at Benitachell. We also ||enjoyed visiting Moraira and Gandia. Oh, and if you haven't been to the most visited village in Spain – Guadalest – take the CV715 from Parcent through Tarbena to Callosa d'En Sarria, then the CV755 to Guadelest – well worth a visit – parking is 2 euros in the village. The journey there through the mountains is incredible, but be prepared for lots of windy mountainous roads (we felt quite safe on it, and there are barriers to stop you driving off the edge!). I think it took us about an hour and a quarter to get there.... So, in summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Casa Julia, and the whole experience gave us a better taste of the real Spain than staying in the...
