Location is great, directly in front of a calmer part of the beach in Peñiscola, where it was not very crowded at all and there was plenty of space to sit, even right next to the water. Also very easy to get public transport (bus station is right outside the hotel) or a bike to the center/castle or to Benicarló (you’ll find better restaurants in Benicarló in my opinion)
I got a standard room for 1 person, it was on the bottom floor, right by the kiddie pool area. Room was ready when I arrived, it was very clean, but the bathroom smelled awful, it did go away after some time, but it left a bad first impression. It smelled like dirty cleaning products or as if someone had just used the bathroom and then mopped with bleach… very strange.
Bed is comfortable as well as the pillows. Plenty of space in the room and bathroom. There is a door between the entrance door and the bedroom which helped a lot with the noise I’ve seen other complain about, this was not an issue for me at all.
Pool was fine, though it seemed to need a cleaning, there were green spots all over the walls. I only used it once because it was usually full of kids.
I only had breakfast included and I wished I hadn’t even included that. It was probably the worst breakfast buffet I’ve ever had. I was one of the first to arrive the 2 days I stayed, and even then the food was cold, bland and poorly prepared. I do understand that it’s a big task to cook for so many people, but I’ve stayed in much larger hotels with less stars and it’s been worlds better. The second day was the worst, I found a dead fly on the cheese (see photo) and the scrambled eggs were somehow hard & chewy, making them inedible. In my opinion, you’re better off not getting breakfast included and having breakfast in some cafe nearby.
Staff were very nice and helpful. If not I would give service rating a 2/5 due to the kitchen service.
All in all, 3/5 because the staff & location balanced out the terrible food & smelly bathroom/dirty pool. I just expected better meal options from a 4-star hotel. I can imagine a family with kids would have an amazing time though. Next time I will look for something better...
Read moreWhile there is nothing terribly wrong with the hotel, which is excellently located in extremely close proximity to the beach and beachside restaurants, provides complimentary beach towels, and with helpful staff - as we checked out early after only one of our two nights booked, I feel I have to deduct two stars (having left 5 star reviews for three other hotels we stayed on this trip).||||At c. £200/night (booked through Expedia), the room fell woefully short of expectations. It smelt like cigarettes, the beds and pillows were not very comfortable, the bathroom was very basic and could use a refurbishment, the tiles / grout were dirty, and the only windows received intense sunlight from about midday until 8pm (maybe a positive outside a heatwave). Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal for a seaside holiday as you spend most of the time on the beach and in the pool, but given the heatwave and relatively limited A/C common areas, we were confined to the room with curtains drawn for hours on end, and at the price we paid it was simply not up to scratch causing us to leave the hotel early.||||The breakfast buffet was free, varied, and 'cheerful' but frankly also below the standard of most hotels I've stayed with cheaper room rates. ||||The onsite parking was useful, albeit at an extra daily charge and EXTREMELY tight to get in and out of while sweating away your rental car security deposit. The amount of car paint traded with the posts tells the full story.||||Overall, had we stayed in cooler weather or were charged less per night perhaps I would have rated this hotel 4 or 5 stars instead of 3, but we weren't so I feel I have to fairly reflect the realities of our stay which was slightly disappointing. I appreciate European hotels have been in high demand this summer so have put prices up to reflect this fact, but if you are cracking the £200/night barrier you are going to have to expect that some customers who are willing to pay that sum might have higher expectations of accommodation, and certainly the Valencia city centre hotel we checked into subsequent at a similar price was far superior. ||||I would...
Read moreWe stayed at Hotel Casablanca last week and overall had a lovely time. The hotel has a lot going for it: clean and comfortable rooms, an unbeatable beachfront location, a great little kids' pool, and a variety of food.||That said, we wanted to share a few things for non-Spanish-speaking guests to be aware of. While we did thorough research before booking and found mostly great reviews, we were surprised to find that all of the communication was exclusively in Spanish. All of the entertainment was also entirely in Spanish, we were really looking forward to things like the comedy show, bingo, and hypnosis night—but unfortunately, we couldn't enjoy any of it due to the language barrier. Most of the staff spoke little to no English, which made many aspects—like using the kids’ club—challenging. ||To their credit, several staff members made a real effort to help us despite the language barrier. Yohan at reception was particularly helpful, and the kids’ club and restaurant staff were warm and friendly. However, there were also a few interactions where we felt other staff weren’t as willing to help.||The food was good, though vegetarian options were limited and not labelled. Occasionally, we noticed flies around the buffet, which was a minor downside.||One other point to mention is the evening entertainment. It went on until around midnight most nights and was quite loud, so it's worth noting that getting to sleep before then may be difficult—especially for families with young children.||All in all, Hotel Casablanca offers a great stay for Spanish-speaking guests. For others, it’s still a beautiful destination, but be prepared for...
