I highly recommend this beautiful, characterful, historical, superbly run hotel in the ||little village of San Asensio in La Rioja Alta.||If you like the thought of staying in a fine old stone house built in the 1700's with heavy antique oak doors and the eight bedrooms discreetly modernised with quality fittings - all in a calm peaceful atmosphere - then this is for you.||The bathrooms are very good with soft fluffy towels - the beds very comfortable and the bed linen superb.||Breakfasts here are a pleasure - prepared with fresh ingredients with the same individual care that typifies this boutique hotel. || There is a modern lift for those who need it - although the wide staircase with a light- filled cupola above it are a pleasure. ||Furnishings in the living room are elegant, yet relaxing - and there is a small outdoor courtyard at the back. ||I have stayed in many paradors across Spain over the years - and La Capellania had the feel of a mini version - but with dedicated personal care shown by the owners ||Clara and Mercedes - which made it so friendly.||They spoke Spanish with me - and English with my son. They introduced us to a weekly Pintxos night in the bars of the village plaza on our arrival - and arranged a tour of a 200 year old local bodega - in underground caves. ||We drove to lovely villages like Abalos - and gorgeous wine centres like La Guardia||- always helped by their suggestions or advice.||I have travelled widely in different parts of the world - and this has been one of my favourite places to stay.||I would be really happy to...
Read moreThis is a lovely, atmospheric guesthouse converted from a historic residence, in the centre of the small town San Asensio in northern La Rioja.|Hosts Clara and Mercedes are welcoming and efficient, and provide useful advice on how to maximise a stay.|We enjoyed tapas at a local bar, on the advice of our hosts. It was just our type of evening meal. The breakfasts were generous and relaxed - meat and cheese, as well as yoghurt, fruit and breads, plus coffee/tea, juice.|There is a spacious sitting room, with fire for a chilly night.|Our room, which was the more spacious variety, was a generous size - not huge - with a king sized bed and an ensuite - very clean and well-equipped but in need of an update; the shower was over the bath. The room incorporated the modern comforts in a historic shell. There is a lift for getting heavy luggage to the rooms.|Parking can be a bit tricky, but we managed to find spots within 50 metres of the hotel.|San Asensio is well-connected for a touring holiday and air/sea ports.|This was a characterful and charming stay.
