At the end of July/early August, we stayed at the charming Stua Grande for only three nights. I had been in the village of Soglio to walk many years ago with my daughter, and always wanted to return. ||The inn/hotel only offers rooms with an excellent bathroom a few steps away from the room; but if you insist on ensuite, then this is not for you. The hotel is situated facing the most impressive alps, which seem so close that you could reach out and touch them. We were initially worried about the rooms without ensuite, but the hotel is small; and you only are a few steps away from a spotless, functional bathroom. || The hotel has a wonderful external dining area with fabulous views, and a bar as well. The food is excellent Swiss/Italian cuisine, with generous serves, and delicious local specialties on offer for lunch or dinner, as well as providing a substantial breakfast.|| Walkers have easy access to the excellent Swiss Post bus, which takes tourists, locals and walkers to the nearby villages on a regular basis, and finally to St. Moritz train station; or Lugano in Italy.|| Why Soglio? Well, it is the most magical atmospheric village, perched on the side of an Alp, retaining its original architecture of slate roofs; and as it is only very small, with limited accommodation, it retains its charming ambiance. || Both times I have visited, I have walked from Soglio to Promontagno through the chestnut woods, which are often swathed in mists from the alps, and are full of atmosphere. ||This wonderful walk and the charm of the village itself is why we visited, even though we only had a few days.|| There are wonderful walks from villages all along the beautiful alpine road, with stunning views, charming inns for lunches, and each evening the romantic unfolding of the village as you walk out of the woods. There are many sites for quiet sitting and contemplating the alpine wonders and the charm of the village itself.|| The staff in this small inn are charming and accommodating, and even though there is an attractive old Palacio, converted into a lovely hotel in the village centre, it does not match the simple hospitality, great food, and splendid position of the Stua Grande.|| Our only regret was that we had only a short stay, as we were expected in Klosters for a tennis tournament. And the journey itself, starting with a fabulous post bus trip[ between the villages between Soglio and St. Moritz; and followed by one of the most spectacular scenic train trips in Switzerland:- from St. Moritz to Klosters, is one of reasons to visit the village.|| Ideally, for walkers,, artists, photographers and those wanting great food, charming hosts, and stunning views,or just a place for quiet contemplation of the surrounding beauty, a week to 10 days would be ideal.||We will return, staying much...
Read moreQuaint hotel nestled among the stunning Alps. The tiny village stands still in time with lots of character and was once voted the quaintest Village in all of Switzerland. We kept our apartment in Bellagio Italy and took the local Bernina Express train that travels on the same line to St Mortz. We then caught the bus that travels through the Bregaglia valley and along the way chose to stay in Soglio so we wouldnt be rushed. The next day we caught the bus to Triano and then the train back to Bellagio. We did have reservations for the hotel but not the train so we would have flexibility on departure time. We found the local train amazing wirh lots of room to move around. It was an amazing one night and two day journey full of beautiful scenery and adorable villages. The hotel staff were very friendly and we found |our room to be extremely clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was beautiful and delicious with many fresh home| made selections to...
Read moreStayed in June with a group of friends from HK for 2 nights. Spacious rooms with spotless bathrooms - room #1 has a very new looking renovated one, had one very happy guest in there;-)||No elevator, so be prepared to lug your suitcase up the stairs - only to the 1st floor, but still. Had rooms with valley views, nice bonus. The church is right next door, so bells are ringing all night.||Unfortunately, we saw more rain than anything else during our stay, but was still enough to take walks through the village and enjoy the atmosphere. The planned hikes had to be skipped, but Soglio remains one of my favorite villages in Switzerland, unbeatable on a beautiful day. ||The restaurant serves excellent Swiss/Italian dishes, had the local chestnut gnocchi which were excellent. Nice breakfast as well.||Overall a great stay and would choose this place again for a...
