Alishan Gou Hotel — Hotel in Alishan Township

The hotel has a great location inside the park, probably the best of all the limited choices as it is in the middle of all the main walking trails, and it is possible to start your trekking from outside the hotel entrance. On arrival at the transport hub, there is a hotel shuttle bus that will take you directly to the hotel, enquire at visitor information for timings. We had a room on the third floor of block 2 which we understood to be the older part of the hotel, however this has now been refurbished. The room was on two levels, downstairs there is a bathroom, refreshment station and a small table with three chairs (we had a triple room, the only one available when we booked), and a short staircase leads to the bedroom. The facilities were better than we expected and perfectly adequate. Although there is a restaurant, this only seems to cater for tour groups but there is a shuttle bus service leaving at 6pm and 7.15pm taking you back to Alishan where there is a slightly better choice of restaurants. Although there is a buffet breakfast, it does cater for local cuisine and as we were up early for the sunrise trip and wanted to leave on the first 8am shuttle back to town so we could book tickets for onward travel (there is a formal seat allocation on Chiayi County Bus services leaving the park that can only be booked on the day), we skipped this and had something to eat at Alishan.|This is a good location in which to enjoy the park amenities and a price which is a lot better than others situated inside the park. It is particularly well situated for the Sunrise viewing. There are two options to get there. First option is the train which departs at 6am, tickets can only be purchased after 4pm the day before travel. The second and better option is the shuttle bus which departs at 5.10am and 6.35am. Tickets can be purchased after 1pm the day before travel. There is a booth near the visitor centre and another near the Alishan Gou hotel meaning anyone arriving at lunchtime can purchase tickets on arrival at the shuttle bus terminal rather than having to go back later in the day to buy a ticket. The shuttle picks up at the nearest train station which is five minutes walk from the hotel. The shuttle also has two extra benefits. Currently the Zhushan train station is closed for re-development (expected to open at the end of 2023) so the train terminates at Duegaoyue station leaving an uphill walk of 500m just to the first look-out point. Additionally, the 5.10am departure time means that you arrive at dawn directly at Zhushan and see the myriad of sky colours as dawn breaks. Anyone arriving on the train only get there just as the sun rises missing much of the pre-sunrise spectacle. As you arrive at Zhushan, there is also benefit in walking another 500m from the first observation point to the Mt. Ogasawara viewing platform. Here the views are much better giving a virtual 180° vista. It is also much quieter than the main viewing platform.|We enjoyed our short stay ay Alishan and we found one full day sufficient to see all the park highlights.
