"Bed bug suspicion and refusal to investigate the issue"

Hello! I stayed at Marafiki from Nov 14 until Nov 25 with my 1yo son and my Mom. We had to leave early because we suspected bed bugs. My son was badly bitten after the fist night we spent at the hotel. The bites look like bed bugs, the mattress and pillows are covered in dark brown-red spot - which bed bugs can leave (their feces).

I checked the bedding only on the night of Nov 24, when I run out of ideas what can possibly cause these type of bites. Before coming to Zanzibar we lived in Mwanza (Tanzania, by Lake Victoria) and travelled a lot, but we never experienced anything like this. We also used anti-mosquito spray and plug-in all the time.

I was not sure if these are bed bugs, that's why I suggested the pest control to investigate further. The hotel owner, Joanna Frenkiel, refused and said that it is impossible to identify any type of bugs in the room.

Joanna and her staff insisted on me paying the full amount for the accommodation. I've already paid 30% and was happy to pay for food, and taxi - because I liked these services. I suggested to leave my credit card info to Joanna and postpone the payment of the rest of the amount until the investigating is complete. I though that the hotel will be interested in providing safe and health environment for their guests. Joanna refused. I payed the whole amount because I was tired of 2,5h of conversation, accusations, and wanted to take my son to a safe place.

In addition Joanna and the hotel manage Tausi accused me that I use my son's condition to get a free vacation, and just don't want to pay for the room. it was very offensive and of course not true. Because I've already payed 30% - $490, and was ready to pay for food and taxi - $664; and I was just asking to postpone the rest of the amount for accommodation- $890 - until we figure out what's going on with the bedding. I was ready to leave my cc info - so Joanna could've charged my card anytime.

In my communication with the hotel I never blamed them that they had bed bugs. I am just a concerned client and a parent, and I had to move to Zanzibar city, pay doctor bills, pay for another hotel. I really didn't know how much more extra money I would have to spend because I left Marafiki.

Hotel refused to cooperate with me and I know that they still accept new guests. I think Joanna could have handled the situation differently - with more care and respect to my family.

Joanna said that they would follow my recommendation to fumigate to hotel. But I am not sure when it would be done. They are accepting new guests now...

I posted some pictures of the hotel on Google. As you can see - there are a lot of great things about the place, but also a bed covered in spots and my child covered in bites (other parts of his body looked worse, nothing under his diapers - only open areas are affected).

After two nights in another hotel my son did not have any new bites and his skin looks much-much better! Of course I am concerned that if the hotel has bed bugs - there is a high chance that we'll bring the home with us. I would be only very happy if the hotel will investigate and show that there are not bed bugs but it does not look like that they want to do anything with the...

We booked this hotel on the basis of the photos and previous reviews on Booking.com||We got there and found that contrary to what the photos show, the property is old, tired and very dirty. ||Firstly, we had to walk from the gate to reception with all our luggage, on a dimly lit path, with no-one to offer help-this was a good 3-400 yds which as an OAP was no joke, with heavy luggage. ||The room we were assigned was for myself, my hubby and my adult daughter. The bathroom/shower was open with no privacy, which left my daughter feeling very uncomfortable indeed. The draining system from the shower was an open gutter, disguised with large stones to fill it, but the water drained along the side of the bathroom, through the toilet and then outside. -smelly and unhygienic.||There were dead insects and rat droppings behind our bed, and some sort of woodpecker? in the rafters, so there was a constant rain of wood dust onto the mosquito net, and sometimes got through to the bed. ||There is no beach at high tide, only rocks, and you can't swim there. It is tiny, and the photos are very misleading. It is also a very small pace which seems to function as separate bungalows to stay in rather than a hotel. |One of the staff was very unpleasant to my daughter, but all the rest of the local staff were very lovely. ||We decided to leave after one night and checked in to a very lovely nearby hotel-we gave the reasons we were leaving to the host-the booking was then cancelled completely on Booking.com, citing failure of credit card payment, even though we had already paid via Booking.com, half of the price to stay for 7 days. This was a complete lie. It basically means that there is no evidence on Booking.com that we ever booked the place or stayed there!!!. We therefore can't review it on Booking.com , and can't get a refund of any kind. Unbelievably dishonest and disgusting.||Food was very good and tasty, but you will spend approx $20 per night per person at least so...

A beautiful boutique styled hotel with comfortable bungalows most with ocean views and lovely front balcony's. The owners are Polish (most resorts in Zanzibar are owned by foreigners), who were kind and helpful. We visited at shoulder season, so there was plenty of pool chairs to choose from. This is a hotel that you would choose if you want to enjoy a quite, smaller resort with a pool and good food. To reach an enjoyable ocean to swim in a shuttle bus is offered for free from 10am-2pm or you can walk 30mins on the beach at low tide (you need to plan this), because this side of the island has low and high tide. If you walk the beach you will have a constant flow of locals looking to sell you various jewelry, etc. Which personally we didn't enjoy. The staff that work at the restaurant were very friendly, we enjoyed speaking a lot with Jackson (Junior and Senior), who both made us feel very comfortable and improved our stay. One of the best parts of the stay was the seafood and local dishes. Everything was very fresh, and flavourful. Breakfast was included and each day we had fresh fruit and great breakfast options. We tried the Spice tour offered by Marafiki, only to later learn that Zanzibar apparently doesn't have real farms (they are all on the mainland). The tour consisted of a walk around a garden with a sample of plants. It was informative, and we did enjoy but it felt dishonest. In addition to the tour fee ($5 per person) each person you meet there either expects a tip or will offer you something to buy. The items they have for sale you will then later see in the market in Stone Town at a more reasonable price. Outside of the resort, and all the resorts we saw on Zanzibar, you are surrounded by underdevelopment and poverty. Marafiki is about a 45 min drive from the airport in the middle of the island.

I had such an incredible experience staying at this resort. It was a pleasure to relax by the pool and enjoy the ocean view. I also enjoyed using the kayaks to paddle out to sea and catch a few small waves. The food was delicious and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel helped me organise tours at good prices and I only had to pay the hotel during check out. The pool was refreshing and the sea boasts a variety of marine life to snorkel with. The hotel accepts cash and card payment which was very helpful. You can even have a massage and enjoy the ocean view. It was breathtaking to watch the moon rise over the ocean at night . There is a free shuttle service to Kiwengwa Beach where you can swim in the sea, eat a restaurant, take kite surfing lessons and have boat rides. The hotel lets you hire a bicycle free of charge to ride to the beach front or into town. The hotel is very close to an ATM , about a 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive . YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY IN DOLLARS for everything you can withdraw in Tanzanian Shillings and pay with the local currency , but you will need a bag to contain all the cash notes because one dollar is worth 23 000 Tanzanian Shillings, so don’t be surprised if a taxi drive cost 20 000 shillings. It’s better to pay things with local currency because when I tried to pay in dollars they often did not have enough change. But I would recommend this lovely hotel resort on a private beach for family, couples and solo travellers

We recently stayed at Marafiki and what an absolutely amazing experience. The staff was very welcoming, warm and helpful at all times. They assisted us promptly with all bookings from airport transfers to activity bookings and transportation. Which made the whole experience stress free. My biggest compliment goes to the restaurant staff, some of the kindest people I have met, Fatima, Peter, Baton, Nyanga and the receptionist Suzanne. These people are simply amazing, they care for all guests with the utmost of care and kindness. The food was absolutely the best, the breakfast spread is large ,tasty and very filling. We loved the Swahili night, great food and entertainment. The view is breathtakingly beautiful, relaxing, calm and tranquil. Pool and ocean view. The rooms are specious, comfortable. I suggest you provide thicker duvet or blanket, to keep warm at night.Since some nights get cooler. Look into insuring the water pressure for warm water is good. Which wasn't always the case. Our overall experience was great and we would definitely come again and recommend anyone looking for a good zanzibar trip to stay at Marafiki.
