The most awful 'hospitality' experience I've had.|My friend booked a few nights as she was visiting family in Peterhead and I was joining her for a few days away. We were travelling with her small dog.|We just needed somewhere local, basic and comfortable enough to sleep in the evenings. We were struggling to find a room as so many places were booked up in the town but Brown's had a room available for £44 /night. The shared bathroom was not ideal but for the price it was understandable. We went with the good online reviews on the place.|We had been given instructions on the phone prior to arrival to collect keys from the main house and where to let ourselves in.|The front door on the street had a sticky lock and it took a minute to actually get the door open. The overflowing bins on either side of us on the street did not help our initial impressions. |When we finally got in, the hall smelled of a kind of fousty washing, or dirty bleach. The hall floor was very sticky. The room was tiny. There were two single beds along the wall, toe to toe with a wardrobe in between. Bedside small tables and a dressing table parallel to one bed with a large TV on it. There wasn't room on the floor to leave anything so luggage went in the wardrobe. It was much smaller than expected and the furniture and bed coverings were very old and grubby looking. The TV had its input cable dragging across the floor under the bed. It wasn't even connected, making the TV useless and just taking up the little space there was. First impressions were very uninviting.|The kitchen space was also tiny and grubby looking, with the toilet and shower room straight off it. There were some bleach stained towels available in the shower room and there was no lock on the door. The toilet door also dragged along the floor making a lot of noise, and it needed to be slammed to shut it.|Although we were disappointed as it did not live up to the online reviews ar all, we persevered as the room was only for sleeping in and we could have meals, coffee etc elsewhere.|However on arriving back to our room in the first evening after visiting family, the room was cold with a damp feeling to it. We figured how to work the heater for the room. As I was preparing for bed, I noticed my top bed cover had small brown crusted stains on it. It had clearly not been washed since the last guest. My headboard was also detached from the bed and no amount of pushing the bed closer to it stopped it from heavily knocking off the wall whenever I sat on the bed. So I pulled the headboard out and put it out into the hall.|In getting into bed, the duvet and pillows were very clearly old and flat. It was so damp cold that I had to wear heavy clothes and slippers in bed. I finally got to sleep around 1am.|At 3am we were awakened by another guest getting up and moving around a lot. There seemed to be no soundproofing in the tiny building at all. Noise from the other 2 guests (workers) with the doors slamming, the kitchen noises on the other side of the thin wall at my head and the noise from using the toilet, was unbearable. The toilet was also being used with the door open which made me feel very uncomfortable and a little unsafe. This all continued for 3 hours. I thought about going out to the car to sleep but was too tired to move. I also was developing a chest cold feeling in my throat and upper chest.|The sticky front lock was also ridiculous. Not only was it very noisy, it also posed an obvious health and safety risk as there was no other fire exit.|I managed around another hour sleep before we got up to gather our things together to leave early. I would have rather slept in the car than spend one more night there.|When the owner arrived with her daughter to clean around 8am (after having spent around a minute themselves trying to get in the front door), they were both hugely dismissive and hostile when we made only a couple of our complaints. |I was told by the daughter that the dog had probably made the crust stains on the bedding. When I tried asking her why she would say something like this - she replied it was because she wasn't going to stand back and see me speak like s* to her mum.|I therefore apologised if i was coming across as rude but it was because I had had little sleep. The owner however continued to dismiss our concerns and we were simply told - what do you expect for £22 per night? (The room was £44 per night). I told her that I expected at least a basic standard of cleanliness and comfort. She dismissed me again, was openly rude with her physical gestures of dismissal and made it clear that she did not value her lowest paying customers.|We left and reclaimed money via booking.com who apologised on their behalf and money was swiftly refunded.||We found a room further afield for that night, and for only £5 more, we enjoyed a bright spacious, clean, warm, comfortable en suite room with very friendly and accommodating staff. |Leaving Peterhead a day earlier than planned, we chose a stop off night at Loch Lomond where again we received superb value for money.||Brown's owner gave us the clear impression that we got what we paid for her with her.|Nope! There are PLENTY of other places who provide superb service and facilities with excellent value for money!|I say, when life gives you Brown lemons - go elsewhere and make...
Read moreA friendly welcome awaits from Mary, the owner of this quaint complex of room only accommodation, a few minutes' walk from all town centre facilities. Do not be put off by the exterior as it possibly doesn't do credit to what is to be found within. I booked a budget twin room and was pleasantly surprised to be given a huge ground floor room which has everything one would need for a stay of 7-14 nights. Two beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, a full sized three seater settee, poufe and wide screen TV. The decor is commensurate with the property but everywhere is clean and hygienic. A kitchen is available for guest use and there were two bathrooms between seven rooms, again spotlessly clean. A laundering service is offered for £6. At £20 per night this is the cheapest guest house accommodation in Scotland yet it offers phenomenal value for money. Minor criticisms are that the cleaners arrive at 7.30am which is fine for guests who are working locally but it's far too early if you're on a leisure break and that there is no discount on the room rate for long stays. Overall, highly recommended and worthy of five stars within its category and on that basis I would...
