I camped here and used the facilities in 2021 when I completed the WHW, and had no complaints.||||I was hiking around here on a unexpectedly scorching hot day (April 2025) and I had run out of water. I walked along the WHW to By The Way, as I remembered they had a water tap for bottle refills on site. Please remember, this tap is mere meters away directly from the West Highland Way trail.||||I tried to use this tap as I was very thirsty and dehydrated, but the tap was turned off. I walked up and down site and couldn't find staff to politely ask for water, so I nipped into the communal pot wash area to fill up my Nalgene bottle and be on my way. As I was filling up, a staff member burst into the room and shouted 'what are you doing?!', I told him I had run out of water, tried to use the tap outside, so I was filling up my bottle with tap water. The staff member continued to shout and rant, telling me that I was the fourth person today to do this, I was taking something for free when I wasn't even staying at the site, and he charged off whilst ranting and raving.||||I exited the pot wash room and he was waiting outside. I asked him why he was in such a bad mood and he re-iterated his complaints whilst throwing a mini tantrum. I reminded him that I had only filled a bottle with tap water, and said I would happily pay for it if he was so desperate. He shook his head and charged off back to reception and I muttered what I thought of him as I left the site.||||It is pretty immoral and embarrassing that a campsite which bases itself directly on Scotland's most popular hiking route denies hikers access to basic tap water top ups and instead hands out tantrums and shouting matches. I'm mortified that this could happen to a tourist who has travelled to Scotland to complete the hike and experience the famous Highland hospitality but is instead met with sheer aggression.||||To note, this exchange was with a middle aged Englishman, I hope this is not official staff policy and this guy was just having an off day. I expect the rest of the staff are nicer than this.||||Poor show, By The...
Read moreStayed in the hostel which was fine but probably some of the worst customer service I’ve experienced. Arrived at about 1.30pm after a day of walking the West Highland Way, reception was closed as check-in wasn’t until 2pm - that’s fine, happy to wait. By check-in time, there was a group of people who had arrived waiting to be checked in. At 2pm, member of staff (female, possibly Australian?) walked right through the middle of us all without acknowledging or even smiling at any of the guests, opened the reception and went inside. It was unclear if we were supposed to follow her or not and as I was closest, I waited a few moments then tentatively stepped inside to ask if she was ready for us or not but before I could even open my mouth, she bit my head off snapping that I could have given her more time to flip the closed sign to open. I was so shocked I apologised but wish I hadn’t, it was so nasty and rude of her. She should learn some customer service skills and should have communicated to the large group of people waiting there that she would be opening reception in a few minutes if she wasn’t ready rather than charging straight past us without so much as a smile. So unwelcoming and really put a dampener on my stay at there, really awful way to treat customers compared to the other places I stayed. It’s not the customer’s fault you are stressed.
Pros: good kitchen in the hostel and close to shops so you can cook, hot showers
Cons: horrible customer service experience, creaking floorboards in the hostel kept waking...
Read moreWe stayed here during the WHW walk for one night in the basic twin camping cabin which is probably the cheapest place there but it was brilliant and all that you need! Small space but great value for money. It had a midge net on window and heating and a fan. It’s by the shop/reception and it’s basically 3 rooms put together but we did t hear the others. Lovely hot clean showers although you had to keep pressing the button as it went off far too quickly. Really nice place everything is spread out so not too crowded. Kitchen good but we had no plates or mugs to make hot drinks with or put food on. Luggage transfer was secure here and we had WiFi too. Few mins walk into Tyndrum and we ate fish and chips at the Tyndrum Inn which was a huge portion and very tasty. Lots of places to buy food there and the petrol station cafe was very good. As everywhere on the WHW everything is over priced. The cafe does open at 7am on the plus side so we had a hot drink and picked up sandwich’s before we set off just after. The man at reception very friendly and happy to help with a emailed in his face and happy to share tips and local info. Cheapest place we stayed but the best! Highly recommend the huts and this place - it rained so it was good to be indoors and...
