I camped here and used the facilities in 2021 when I completed the WHW, and had no complaints.||||I was hiking around here on a unexpectedly scorching hot day (April 2025) and I had run out of water. I walked along the WHW to By The Way, as I remembered they had a water tap for bottle refills on site. Please remember, this tap is mere meters away directly from the West Highland Way trail.||||I tried to use this tap as I was very thirsty and dehydrated, but the tap was turned off. I walked up and down site and couldn't find staff to politely ask for water, so I nipped into the communal pot wash area to fill up my Nalgene bottle and be on my way. As I was filling up, a staff member burst into the room and shouted 'what are you doing?!', I told him I had run out of water, tried to use the tap outside, so I was filling up my bottle with tap water. The staff member continued to shout and rant, telling me that I was the fourth person today to do this, I was taking something for free when I wasn't even staying at the site, and he charged off whilst ranting and raving.||||I exited the pot wash room and he was waiting outside. I asked him why he was in such a bad mood and he re-iterated his complaints whilst throwing a mini tantrum. I reminded him that I had only filled a bottle with tap water, and said I would happily pay for it if he was so desperate. He shook his head and charged off back to reception and I muttered what I thought of him as I left the site.||||It is pretty immoral and embarrassing that a campsite which bases itself directly on Scotland's most popular hiking route denies hikers access to basic tap water top ups and instead hands out tantrums and shouting matches. I'm mortified that this could happen to a tourist who has travelled to Scotland to complete the hike and experience the famous Highland hospitality but is instead met with sheer aggression.||||To note, this exchange was with a middle aged Englishman, I hope this is not official staff policy and this guy was just having an off day. I expect the rest of the staff are nicer than this.||||Poor show, By The...

Stayed in the hostel which was fine but probably some of the worst customer service I’ve experienced. Arrived at about 1.30pm after a day of walking the West Highland Way, reception was closed as check-in wasn’t until 2pm - that’s fine, happy to wait. By check-in time, there was a group of people who had arrived waiting to be checked in. At 2pm, member of staff (female, possibly Australian?) walked right through the middle of us all without acknowledging or even smiling at any of the guests, opened the reception and went inside. It was unclear if we were supposed to follow her or not and as I was closest, I waited a few moments then tentatively stepped inside to ask if she was ready for us or not but before I could even open my mouth, she bit my head off snapping that I could have given her more time to flip the closed sign to open. I was so shocked I apologised but wish I hadn’t, it was so nasty and rude of her. She should learn some customer service skills and should have communicated to the large group of people waiting there that she would be opening reception in a few minutes if she wasn’t ready rather than charging straight past us without so much as a smile. So unwelcoming and really put a dampener on my stay at there, really awful way to treat customers compared to the other places I stayed. It’s not the customer’s fault you are stressed.

Pros: good kitchen in the hostel and close to shops so you can cook, hot showers

Cons: horrible customer service experience, creaking floorboards in the hostel kept waking...

We stayed here during the WHW walk for one night in the basic twin camping cabin which is probably the cheapest place there but it was brilliant and all that you need! Small space but great value for money. It had a midge net on window and heating and a fan. It’s by the shop/reception and it’s basically 3 rooms put together but we did t hear the others. Lovely hot clean showers although you had to keep pressing the button as it went off far too quickly. Really nice place everything is spread out so not too crowded. Kitchen good but we had no plates or mugs to make hot drinks with or put food on. Luggage transfer was secure here and we had WiFi too. Few mins walk into Tyndrum and we ate fish and chips at the Tyndrum Inn which was a huge portion and very tasty. Lots of places to buy food there and the petrol station cafe was very good. As everywhere on the WHW everything is over priced. The cafe does open at 7am on the plus side so we had a hot drink and picked up sandwich’s before we set off just after. The man at reception very friendly and happy to help with a emailed in his face and happy to share tips and local info. Cheapest place we stayed but the best! Highly recommend the huts and this place - it rained so it was good to be indoors and...

We arrived at By The Way Hostel well after closing time due to a major road accident that delayed our journey by several hours. Despite the late hour, we were warmly greeted by a very kind gentleman who took the time to thoroughly show us around the facilities — a gesture we truly appreciated after a long and stressful trip. The entire place was spotless, with clear care taken in maintaining high standards. Our room was a very pleasant surprise: bunk beds were comfortable with good quality pillows and duvets — much better than what you usually expect from a hostel stay. The shared kitchen was outstanding — spacious, clean, and impressively well-equipped for even more advanced cooking. Whether you're just reheating or preparing a full meal, it has everything you might need. In addition to rooms and dorms, the property also offers charming little round camping pods — like cozy hobbit holes — for those looking for a unique overnight experience. Overall, this was hands down the best hostel we stayed in during our time in Scotland. Highly recommended to hikers, road-trippers, and anyone exploring the Highlands.

The lady when we checked in was really friendly and helpful! Unfortunately, when we made our booking/reservation in August, it appeared that we could check in anytime before 8pm. When we arrived for our stay (September 25th) a sign showed that check in ended at 7pm for winter hours, but luckily there was still someone there who was willing to let us check in. We were in site 2, no issues getting to or finding the site, no issues getting into the spot. The electrical hookup worked, the WiFi was decent. There is a train that comes through pretty close by, but it wasn’t noisy enough to bother us. We only stayed here one night so didn’t get a chance to check out the area much or use the restrooms/showers. We did use the motorhome service point though to empty our grey water tank (there was also a fresh water fill and a chemical toilet disposal point that we didn’t need to use).

Excellent campsite. Got a trekker cabin on our way up into the Highlands and it was comfortable and clean. Four bunks, so if you don't have a sleeping bag then you'll need some fitted sheets and yer duvet! A nice wall heater, gets the place toastie very quickly. There is a microwave and kettle, with a couple of sockets to recharge your tech. Facilities look to be newly refurbished with some single toilets with showers for privacy, or a communal washroom for boys and girls. Wasn't walking, so didn't look at the other facilities for walkers etc, but from what I did see the rest will be just as good. Nice friendly service from all staff on site. The village is a very short walk, with shops, pubs and cafes that will cater for all tastes. We'll recommend and will look forward to visiting again.
