Absolutely wonderful location. Less than 5 minutes by car from Whitby on one side and 10 minutes through the estate to a large Sainsbury/Aldi/B&M with reasonably priced fuel and all the resources for a great self-catering holiday.
This little village of holiday homes is set on the hillside just above Whitby and has glorious countryside if you love to ramble, hike, etc. The viaduct is especially attractive and there is a bungy club for the adventurous.
The only concern is as follows:
The phone signal is intermittent at best, and WiFi is non-existent, it supposedly does exist but we never managed to connect even at the second-level cottages and it's not powerful enough for streaming, etc which is a major problem unless you are prepared for a digital detox.
There is a lower level of homes close to the river but it is down a treacherous steep hillside road and you need a four-wheel car to get back up safely when it's wet... these are beautiful and many seem to be privately owned or for sale. They have ducks and wildfowl visiting which are friendly. The landscaping is lovely and we would love to see what it's like in better weather.
We enjoyed a wonderful week and our 'home' was spacious and comfortable we particularly enjoyed the two balconies but would point out that as a couple we especially enjoyed the 4 bathrooms and third-floor loft master suite. Our cottage was meant for 6-8 guests so we only used the lower bedrooms but it would be excellent for family groups.
A tiny concern in this modern age was the single tiny TV in the lounge which again was not even a smart TV, but it did the job for us in the dark evenings.
There is a beautiful pool house next to the reception which is would be virtually private if you want to use it for a small key deposit. It looks very inviting from the outside as we didn't know it was there.
This is a great holiday for relaxing and then exploring the fabulous Whitby coastline and town. We want to return soon and can highly recommend it for total relaxation.
A final concern is the very tight shared parking spaces which are barely adequate as the lovely landscaping restricts easy access. Each pair of cottages share a pair of spaces and access can be rather limited with modern cars being so big, however, there is a reception car park nearby so you could ask to use this if you do have a neighbour...
Read moreGorgeous location just at the upper entrance to Whitby Town and set in wonderful countryside with sweeping views from the viaduct down to the River where you can see wild life, birds, lovely views etc.
The cottages are in many different styles depending on your needs and our cottage is located on the top level on the second tier of properties which means we avoided the horrendous steep and narrow drive down to the Riverside cottages which we visited on our 1st day after settling in. They are fabulous and have wonderful river views but to be honest our Kia Sportage barely made it back up as the hill was almost vertical at a couple of points and we almost slid backwards a couple of times which was frankly terrifying... however this has stopped our desire to rent a Riverside cottage in favour of our beautiful hilltop retreat which is superb and absolutely more than we could have hoped for.
There are a couple of niggles which must be pointed out but they are not at all deal breakers ie
The phone signal is really slow even though it says 4g, it's not.
The cottages will not get even a passing WiFi signal from the on site servers so we stopped trying very quickly. They don't allow streaming due to limited bandwidth but we can't connect to this and its like a digital detox, though you can get a basic mobile signal most of the time.
The only TV in our cottage is tiny and freesat only, no smart facilities so no Netflix, prime etc., and it refuses to even try to connect to the WiFi so don't bother.
Enjoy the peace from your two balconies, all you can hear is birds, water and occasional passing trains. It's bliss, especially at night, no cars, no noisy neighbours just birds and bats and trains.
There is a lovely enclosed pool on site next to reception which we did not know and all you have to do is pay a £10 key deposit.
We will definitely highly recommend this place to everyone who asks as it's fantastic value and really close to Sainsbury, B&M and all the necessary shops you want. Whitby is 5 minutes away by car and superb in...
Read moreWe stayed in the Endeavour cottage at Captain Cooks Haven in Whitby. We enjoyed the location which is beautiful with the country feel and the river close by. The walk into Whitby along the cinder track was enjoyable and "do-able" for adults and children alike. However while the accommodation was adequate and reasonably equipped there were a few annoyances:- the vacuum cleaner did not work, laminate floors but no mop and bucket provided, plenty of bins but no bin liners provided and only three teaspoons for 6 people. On our arrival we were pleased with the property but over the following few days we noticed just how dirty it was. Popcorn and lolly pop sticks were found under one of the beds and when we spoke to management about this she had to acknowledge that they did not clean under the beds every time they clean. I found this concerning as I'm aware of the rise in the number of bed bugs which often spread from hotels via suitcases. The bedding did appear to be clean. The laminate flooring in the living area was very dirty and the children's sock soles were filthy. There were cobwebs everywhere, especially in the tv unit and corners of the ceilings, and any non obvious surfaces had dust on them i.e. light fittings and under the dvd player. The management person informed me that they do occasionally miss things but this is neglectful thorough routine cleaning. No concerns regarding heating or hot water just the poor level of cleanliness- Four in a Bed competitors would score it 1. These cottages are privately owned and serviced by a separate management company, Hoseasons are only used for booking. I'm sure that some of the cottages are great, ours wasn't sadly. If I went again I would carefully inspect...
