Me and my fiance decided to book up here for two nights as it was close to Keswick town centre and seemed to have good reviews. We turned up after a 3 hour journey too 21 questions about who was with us , are we meeting anyone and even tho we paid for our tent pitch they asked if we were sleeping in our transit (which is our car). We were told curfew is half 10 and they expect us to be quiet after then. And we were to leave at 12:00. After the grilling we were allocated our field and we went to set up camp. Our field was quite full of tents and motohomes but was so quiet. We had an awful feeling like we were constantly being watched from other campers and the staff .
The next day we noticed members of staff going around our area checking cars and tents with red labels shouting which ones were over stayers and getting rather excited about being able to charge them the extra day!! It was 12:02!!
We thought it was an absolute disgrace.
We started speaking to a few people we had met who were camped up near us and realised they were from the north east too.
They invited us to a bbq later that day and we decided it would be nice to go. What a mistake that was. The staff were constantly driving around and watching us and the other campers there were clearly annoyed we were socialising.
The next day the staff were walking around again checking cars and tents this time 9:30!! These people do not want people there on their site . They want the money but not the actual people their. We packed up and went to Braithwaite for our walk. We thankfully only booked two nights on this site.
We went for a 4 hour walk up the mountains and decided to pop in on the people we met at the site before we went home to say goodbye.
We sat talking to him for around 10mins and had an altercation with another car who was also sharing our field who was coming up the road we said good bye and started driving back up the road and sure enough a member of staff at the side of the road had his hand stuck out meaning he wanted a word.
A member of staff just noticed you coming back in and you were due to check out this morning. We explained that we did check out but we had come to say goodbye to a friend we had met here.
He was not impressed. We knew it was the other camper we had an altercation with that had complained as the man who was talking to us only had our last 3 numbers of our reg.
Overall toilets were nice. But definitely would not stay here again. It was horrendous from day one. The staff all have stinking attitudes and they just want you off the site asap.
We could not chill out here or relax. We were constantly being watched. It's a shame because if they were a bit more relaxed then we would...
Read moreAfter a brilliant experience the first time we visited, our most recent trip was good but there were a few issues that nearly ruined our visit... I hasten to add not the fault of Castlerigg team although they could certainly have helped with mitigation and I have left this review to perhaps help them consider how.
On our first night a family who had clearly never camped before set up around 2m from the back of our tent. Although well inside the 4m spacing advised, this could have been overlooked had they not proceeded to be extremely loud, both shouting at each other for chargers and standing right outside our tent talking loudly until nearly 1am meaning that we got very little sleep before an arduous hike the next day. One of the reasons we have enjoyed the site is the 10:30 noise cut off. Sadly this was not policed very effectively.
We then arrived back after our hike to see another tent had set up close to ours (ok) but this time had setup an 8 person dining table literally 1m from the door to our tent, so close it was where we had sat the night before. I have never seen anything like that level of bad site etiquette. After having to approach this group, they agreed to move their table yet only moved it less than 1m - being deliberately provocative.
We were left with no choice but to relocate our tent and all our stuff to the other end of the field after a 15 mile hike in hot weather to stand any chance of enjoying the remainder of our three nights. We nearly just packed up and left.
I think better policing or advice to newcomers on what 4m spacing looks like in the field and that the spacing should include furniture wouldn't go amiss. Some of these people who have never camped seem quite thoughtless and don't have a sense of space.
I am less sure how noise can be policed but it really was unbelievable to see people have such a lack of self-awareness and respect for others so late at night especially on a site like this.
We love Castlerigg, it's a fabulous site with real care given to the locale, friendly staff and a great guest set up and why we came back again! We really hope to be back, it probably won't be in the school holidays which is sad and our experience has certainly will make us think twice before we do book.
Simply helping people get the spacing correct between tents (advise the number of large paces etc) including furniture and the staff perhaps intervening where this is not happening would be brilliant. Also National Trust do operate a 6m boundary on their less expensive sites so perhaps given the costs, a 6m spacing could be considered for the future. This would also be much...
Read moreI've been coming for more than 15 years to the Campsite and we turned up yesterday to be met with the most awful attitude and customer unfriendliness ever. 2 ladies were on who aren't normally on reception and the older lady was very rude, condescending and blatantly aggressive in her manner. We turned up as 3 adult males and a teenager. Because of this, we were told we were a risk by the older lady.(Despite the same party having been booked onto the site many, many ,many times in the past). She told us she wasn't prepared to take the gamble with us and when we explained that we are on the site's computer, have been so many times we have lost count, and that the adults were Search & Rescue personnel, and the teenager was one of the sons, and we were looking for a 1 night pass through as we were on a charity fundraiser. The lady's words were "I don't care and I want a security deposit off you if you intend staying" WOW!!!! We are such a risk that its not even in their terms and conditions that a security deposit is now required for "At risk" people... Needless to say, this has left a massive massive bad taste in our mouths and now we will always source alternative accommodation. We have recommended people to go there so many times and had the other 2 ladies been on who are normally on, they would have seen us and realised we are regulars and there would never have been a problem...just like every other time we have been.
All it takes is one or 2 people to undo many many years of great positive things to have come from that site and this lady has single handedly alienated some of their most loyal customers within 3 minutes.. Well done you!
I'm rating this as 1 star for the sheer disgusting attitude and dis-courtesy shown to their guests... I don't care if she was having a bad day, people who are willing to give money to stay at the site and who can be looked up on the computer as existing customers (Which she didn't do even after letting her know), should not be treated this way.
As visitors, we have a choice on a lot of parks around Keswick, and it's out of sheer loyalty that we have been coming for in excess of 15 years, and not always as this group, sometimes with our partners as well, and this isn't once a year either...sometimes this is twice a month for most of the year.
Maybe the owners should consider that they aren't the only site in Keswick, and not the best site at that, and perhaps advise their staff to see their customers as customers / guests...
