We have spent 5 amazing nights here. Great camping adventure If you are looking for a place that is close to nature and far from the crowds, Farr's Meadow is nestled in a lush meadow by the River Stour, where you can swim, fish, or paddle board. You can choose from a variety of accommodation options, from cosy tents and yurts to quirky shepherd's huts, all equipped with comfy beds and fire pits. The facilities are simple but clean and sustainable, with compost toilets, solar showers, and drinking water. David is 10/10 and the atmosphere is calm and serene. The site is also a great base for exploring the charming town of Wimborne Minster, where you can find quaint shops, pubs, restaurants, and attractions(Wimborne Model Town, Tivoli Theatre, or if you are around in August you can attend Dub at the Pub - local festival, etc). Whether you want to relax by the river, hike in the countryside, or enjoy some culture and history, you will find something for everyone. It made us and our dog feel closer to nature and ourselves.
To add some more excitement to our trip, we also visited the nearby Bournemouth Beach one of the best beaches in the UK, with seven miles of golden sands, a historic pier, a water play area, an oceanarium, and many cafés and restaurants.
On other days we went for some hikes along the Jurassic Coast which covers 95 miles of coastline from East Devon to Dorset, with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth's history. You can see amazing rock formations, cliff faces, fossils, and wildlife along the way. Some of the highlights include Lyme Regis, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Old Harry Rocks, or Dancing Ledge.
There is so much to see and do around Farrs Meadow that you will never get bored. You can have a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation on your camping holiday. This is a camping site that always gave us...
Read moreFarrs Meadow campsite is a rustic site that won't suit everyone. David and Jasper are extremely welcoming and very helpful with taking your kit from the carpark up to the top camping/yurt field in their 4x4, which is a useful service as it's a short but steep walk to get there. The top camping field is long and narrow, surrounded by trees, with a track down the middle so it's not suitable for ball games etc. Campfires are allowed and you can purchase wood or bring your own. The top camping field has two very basic compost toilets in converted horseboxes which you need to stoop quite low to access through the small doorways. There is only natural light so you will need a torch after sunset. Hand sanitiser was provided but not toilet roll. There is another compost toilet in the lower Shepherd's Huts field. The showers, also in converted horseboxes, are next to the carpark but I didn't try these so I can't comment. The washing up area is next to the showers and supplies cold water only into a large trough. This area is not covered so could be an issue if it's raining. Drinking water is available in this area also. To the side of the carpark, past some greenhouses, is an under cover seating area and room with fridge-freezers which we found very helpful for freezing our icepacks but I think you could use for your own food/drinks too. The children in our group seemed happy exploring the site and playing on the rope swings. It's approximately a 5 min walk to the Eye Bridge section of the River Stour where it was shallow enough for wading at the time of our visit but also deep enough for an inflatable dinghy. There is free parking at the river which was popular with kayakers and paddleboarders. If I had to camp at Farrs Meadow again that would be fine but I'd probably choose somewhere with better...
Read moreLiked: Location was amazing. Such a wonderful view from the bottom shepherds hut paddock. David, the host, was very kind enough to let us pitch our quick getaway tent in this field due to no other occupants and we were only staying onsite for a total of 12 hours.
Despite arriving about an hour later than planned, David was enthusiastic about our stay, chatted about why we were not cold having driven with the roof down on the car, talked to us a little bit about the amenities of the site and gave us the best tour he could give, considering it was pretty dark at that point.
Total credit to the campsite.
Camp fire was no issue, absolutely massive fire bowl already provided.
We got woken up by cockerel’s and hens. This isn’t a complaint. They woke us up by surrounding the tent like an angry gang of clueless birds. We accidentally left a box of 5 chicken selects which one particularly hefty guy with dark brown, almost black bits, scoffed down in record time. I’m sorry David! This wasn’t an intentional attempt at the plucky rooster to engage in mild cannibalism I swear!
David invited us to return any time we like. We’re in the area very frequently so as time and weather allows, this may well become a regular place to bed down in peace and quiet for the night.
It has no WiFi, but, who cares. This is a site to switch off from it.
Disliked: That’s easy! The driveway from the main road (itself a pain in the… yep) is basically unstable surfaces meets steep bits meets random deep idents in the surface. It’s pretty winding too. Rear wheel drivers beware, you’ll want less torque more traction for this bad boy. Slow and steady will win that race. I can imagine it changes during rainfalls too. Just something to...
