Read moreA wonderful place to stay. Situated in the village of Braithwaite, 2.4 miles from Keswick centre, Fern Howe looks out over the valley to Skiddaw.
Check in was flawless due to the information provided in advance by Emma and Mark. My room, Ennerdale, was a single that had wonderful views out to Skiddaw. The room was spotlessly clean, the bed was very comfortable and there was ample storage space for one person. The room also had a small desk with a comfortable chair and a large flat screen T.V. What I enjoyed most about the room was the bathroom. It was a separate room on the left as you walk in. It had a modern power shower, sink, toilet and a huge bath, positioned directly under a large veluxe window, perfect for soaking in following a full day of walking.
The breakfast room was beautiful and had recently been redecorated. A full selection of cereals, fruits, yoghurts and fruit juice were available every morning. I really liked the fact that in order to reduce waist you choose what items you want for your cooked breakfast the evening before, I highly recommend the bacon. The small details such as the animal themed table mats and coasters are what makes this guest house stand out from the crowd.
Emma and Mark have clearly worked hard to not only make their guests feel comfortable but to do so with a sustainable ethos. From the ability to recycle your waste in your room to smart radiators managing the temperature of the room, it's all admirable.
There are lots of other positive things that I could say about my time at Fern Howe but I would highly recommend you book and find them out...
Read moreI stayed one night, to meet friends staying elsewhere in Braithwaite.||It was a pleasant enough stay but not a five out of five. I’m perplexed by the gushing reviews.||The good bits:||The sausage and egg at breakfast were obviously good quality.||The bed was comfortable.||The room had a fan in it (which I needed; the room in the eaves got very warm)||They give you biscuits in the room, which is a nice old-fashioned touch.||The owner, whom most guests will only encounter at breakfast because of the self-check in system, was nice.||The not so good bits:||The room contained a small fridge, but it was unplugged. I wouldn’t be able to keep anything cool in there because by the time it got to temperature, I’d have been gone! Why bother?||The room was very poky, and the bathroom unusually so: on exiting the shower you couldn’t dry yourself properly in the bathroom because space was so limited.||The decor, and especially the bathroom, looked tired. The room smelled of old cigarette smoke, plainly someone had ignored the no smoking rule. The bath towels were the disappointing ‘so small that they barely wrap around you once, so that you won’t steal them’ type. ||The parking was quite unnerving: when I arrived I had a choice between a space at an impossible angle and one on a cliff edge. Luckily some kind fellow guests guided me into the latter.|||In summary, it was nice enough but that’s all. I thought that £119 for one night was ambitious but it’s August in the lakes. I...
