First you are advised to make sure you know where Lowthwaite B&B is on the map as it is way up on the side of Little Mell Fell on a single track road.
On arrival we were greeted by Jim and shown around the breakfast room and our bedroom. The rooms are tastefully decorated and there is a wealth of Zanzibar dhow timbers - be sure to ask Jim more about this!
The Garden room was spotless. It has a double bed, tea & coffee making facilities including a cafetiere PLUS two home made muffins by Tine (Jim's Danish wife). The room has a massive bath and looks out onto the garden and comes with an outside table and chairs to watch the birds feeding - woodpecker included!
Jim advised us on where to have dinner and his recommendation - The Troutbeck Inn, turned out to be excellent.
Sleeping at Lowthwaite was brilliant; it's so quiet and nothing to disturb you.
Breakfast choices had been made the evening before. The starter includes an array of cereals, yoghurt and fruit salad (check out the photograph!). We chose the full English. Awesome! 2 eggs, 2 dry cured bacon, local sausage, fresh tomatoes and mushrooms. And help yourself to as much toast as you want to make.
May I suggest you ask for advice about the local area as Jim is extremely knowledgeable. His advised route for us on our return journey was delightful and most beautiful.
What more can I say? Should we be back in the area we plan to come again and that is the best recommendation anyone can give.
Thanks Jim and Tine for a wonderful overnight stay and lovely Lake...
Read moreWe had a wonderful stay! The whole place is quite romantic and relaxed. The bedroom has a bathroom (with a big bathtub) and another one with just a toilet, a small living room with TV and sofas, and a room with two twin bed, that they kindly displayed together since we were a couple. Toiletries, towels and bathrobes were provided and good quality. Everything was quite clean. The place is very quiet, no noise whatsoever and quite close to Ullswater. The hosts were amazing, giving us plenty of suggestions of what to do around the area, they respect your privacy while being completely available. You have a place to park easily, and the hosts gave accurate directions. Honestly my favourite part was the breakfast which was excellent!! Probably the best breakfast I ever had on a hotel/BB! Everything was very fresh and made with excellent ingredients - you have a time slot and let them know what you want in advance (you have several options) and they will cook in for that time, so everything is fresh and warm. Not really a problem for us but WiFi was very weak and so as reception, but it is to be expected in the Lake District. I would say the price is a bit expensive for a room, but for what I gather is normal for the area, and honestly we considered it was worth it for the excellent service! We were very glad we chose this place and would...
Read moreA wonderful experience! A warm welcome, and thoroughly looked after in every way. Jim and Tine are excellent hosts and can offer plenty of help with planning activities in the local area. The atmosphere of the house and gardens is tranquil, no noise except for birds singing, surrounding views are vast and unpoilt, and Lowthwaite is really easy to find and access from the towns of Penrith and Kendall. The decor is unique and the dining room is full of interesting books and furniture collected by the hosts on their travels. You can watch the birds feeding just outside the windows. Our room (The Blencathra Room) was clean and very well presented, comfortable, and had a big bath, soft robes and towels, a good tea and coffee selection, an impressive cactus collection, and a gift of home-made muffins each day! Breakfasts are exceptional with a wide selection you can pre-order the night before: pancakes, English breakfast, healthy fruit and granola, and freshly baked bread and cakes each morning too. We also had dinner one night which was a Danish menu cooked and served beautifully by Tine. All in all we were spoilt, I would recommend the area and especially this b&b to those who want to scale peaks and those who want to take it easy and explore another side to the Lakes. Hope to...
