Outdated , dilapidated and requiring serious maintenance, I have visited the site 2 times in the past this being my third time ,the site seems to have acquired new management since my last visit and alot has gone downhill, the cabins you can rent , vary in what's actually available ( not advertised ) so you kind of play the lottery, will you get a mosquito net covering the window ? Will you get a TV remote? Will you get put in the dreaded cabin 10 as we were , around 3 meters from an overflowing blocked sewage drain , seems it's just pot luck , as you don't book a specific cabin , all the cabins outside although fit for purpose are missing parts , holes in the walls , rot visible, the whole place seems to need serious maintenance, I loved visiting and the bar and food available on site are great , it's just the accomodation, I'f your planing in advance and looking at more then one night , look at the hostel place 5 mins up the road , cheaper and has en suite rooms ~ we were placed in cabin 10 , after a warm night enduring the unique scent of sewage we complained at the main desk to be told it was a neighbors property, although the drain was actually on the site located right next to the cabin , so we were moved the opposite end , to an absolute miji infested cesspool, avoid cabin 1 in summer months!! , we left early we couldn't stand it , and sadly probably won't return until new management come in. ||Some of the major issues encountered ( hopefully this will be amended ) |- electrics exposed and live in shower block |- no working door lock handles on all single showers and toilets ( have to jam finger in to lock door ) , my friend walked in on a lady using the restroom as she probably couldn't lock the door|-one light works in one shower room but the tap on the sink doesn't, vice versa in the only other shower room |- all rooms have what seems like different things available, as my post above describes, some have nets so you can open window without being eaten alive , some have TV remotes , the 2 we stayed in don't. Some of the fly zappers work , some don't.The list goes on |Hopefully this helps someone out when choosing where to stay , il say this again I've been twice in the past years apart each time and it's really gone downhill right now , I sadly highly...
Read moreI recently stayed at Macdonald Hotel and Cabins in Kinlochleven. I was walking with my two sons and a friend and we stayed in a 4 bunk cabin for 4 nights. The location was wonderful and the staff were friendly. There was also a bar with excellent Guinness, and a pool table. Due to our company and the circumstances of the visit, it was, on the whole, a pleasant stay.|However, there were many areas of basic neglect within the site. The showers (some of which appeared to be quite old) were difficult to use, broken, with bits missing, and they flooded due to blocked drains. Toilets were out of order. Lights were not working and taps were not working. The wood in a number of the cabins was in an advanced state of decay; even the pool table was broken. Myself and my son, who slept in the top bunks, have suffered from a quite severe rash since departing, so the cleanliness of the place is also in doubt. In short, there was a general air of neglect and disrepair about the place.|I remonstrated with the manager regarding these issues and was informed that he was unable to locate tradespeople to repair the problems . Having read previous reviews, these areas of neglect are not recent and could and should have been repaired, had the company taken its responsibility to do so seriously.|Quite frankly, it is wrong that the company who owns the site is not fulfilling its role in providing the requisite standard of accommodation, (that we encountered within other similar sites along the route of the West Highland Way) whilst continuing to charge people what is, in effect, an overpriced stay. My main concern though is the treatment of the staff. The place was clearly understaffed and as a consequence they were overworked and, as we witnessed on our first night, on the receiving end of unpleasant verbal protests from dissatisfied customers.|I would recommend that travellers, if possible, find alternative accommodation in Kinlochleven. I would also encourage guests who are dissatisfied with their stay to make their feelings known to a body that can exert pressure on the owners to institute the necessary improvements. I will personally contact Trading Standards...

Positives accepts dogs friendly and efficient check in nice location decent sized rooms with working amenities food and drinks arrived quickly
Negatives room was a bit grubby- dirty light switches, grimey floor Very very expensive for what it was £218 room, £37.50 x3 small portion breakfasts, £10 dog (does not seem to be used for extra cleaning required) £53 x 3 average small portion meals 1/3 of the cost of my previous entire weeks holiday. lights did not work on the landing leaving it pitch black- emergency lighting not working in case of fire. view not really as advertised. Pretty but a bit oversold. short staffed one person doing reception, taking food orders, pouring drinks. Nice staff but didn’t have the rescourses to make this a nice and welcoming experience. Seemed to be all about being fast and taking money. saw people staying in the cabins queuing for the showers outside in midge hell. meals were edible but if I’m honest the sticky tables and grimey room put me off eating. For £12.50 it was a minimal breakfast buffet- toast, cereal, yogurt. The main course was 1 sausage, 1 egg, 1 piece of bacon, 1 half of a tomato and a small portion of beans.
I would not stay again. I looked into this hotel out of interest- I thought as it was an ex aluminium town trying to make money through tourism- maybe it was a struggling local business.
It isn’t. The owner owns several hotels across Scotland and is based in Glasgow. It definitely feels like it’s a once a done approach as people are either climbing Ben Nevis or walking the West Highland Way so the reviews don’t matter.
I feel angry that to make more and more money guests are being overcharged for a sub par experience. Was not a nice end to my otherwise amazing Scottish holiday.
I am a walker and if I’d been on a long hike and paid upwards of £200 for the experience we had I’d be absolutely fuming.
Not the staffs fault at all. They seemed run ragged without proper investment/support. As much as I hate to do a local business down- avoid and either find a different hotel, b and b...
