I was so excited to come to Bargoed Farm for a holiday in my campervan. We booked a pitch with a hot tub and paid extra for a lake view. The website promises a location that is “set in an atmosphere of relaxed rural charm” and upon arrival (Sunday at around 2pm) it looked like this is what we were getting. One of the biggest pitches I have ever stayed on with its own immaculately clean hot tub and both hard standing and grass side to enjoy. Excited, we began to put up our drive away awning. The weather was lovely but my word was it windy! We are seasoned campers and have visited lots of places but never before have I had such issues pitching a tent! The hard standing was so tough it broke several of our rock pegs (those designed for this type of pitch). We ended up with a bit of a parachute in the wind simply because we were finding the pitch too challenging so couldn’t baton down the hatches as it were. Still, a 5 star pitch in my opinion. 8 am, Monday morning I am out with a cuppa enjoying a nice quiet view of the lake and all of a sudden I hear the beep beep beep of plant machinery. Oh no! It turns out that our promised “relaxed rural charm” was not to be. What the website doesn’t tell you is that the park are extending (hopefully building a water park) and all day, all week, crashing and banging from this machinery as it goes about its working day just 50 or so yards from our pitch. I have just seen another review from over a year ago complaining about this so must be a long term problem and not just a few weeks work so bear that in mind when booking. We wanted to enjoy the facilities so went down to the pub on site. The theme here is cows and each different area is given a cow name. There was the moody calf and crazy cow kids play area, the moo-tel for the accommodation block and the pub called The Moody Cow. What the website doesn’t share are the stroppy cow on reception, and the lazy cow and ignorant cow behind the bar. A warm welcome it was not! We went in a few times during our stay and thankfully we met different staff who were much more pleasant towards the end of our trip. The 1 star service is reserved for those who were pleasant. There were good bits, so, for the sake of a fair review, dogs can go in certain parts of the pub and some of the more friendly staff members gave them water and treats, and the food was really lovely! The little farm shop on site is cute but don’t expect to stock up on your normal supplies here. It is a farm shop with “tourist” style produce like over-priced chutneys and jams. There are some meats and artisan bread and bakes, and over-priced gifts. You’ll have to nip out into town for “normal” supplies. There is a bus that runs along the main road and although not an official stop, it will stop outside the site. You can get into New Quay and other neighbouring towns from there which is handy. The bus company says that it doesn’t carry dogs but the driver both ways let us on with no issues. There isn’t really anywhere to walk to off site so the bus helps with the 3 stars for location. When booking, if you want a quiet night I’d suggest checking to see if there is an event booked into the barn. The instructions state that quiet time on site is after 10pm but if you’re lucky enough to pay more for a lakeside pitch, and there’s a wedding on, be prepared for a rave until midnight. Congratulations to the happy couple we saw getting married but our only reprieve from the banging and crashing of the building site was a quiet night in the hot tub and not a full volume party across the lake! We should have been staying for a week but after 4 nights we had had just about enough so packed up the camper and headed off. I don’t think I’ll be...
Read moreFinally managed to get around to trying this site after a few years of hearing great things about it. Booked in advance and managed to secure a lake-view hot tub pitch for four nights. It's clear that the park have, and continue to, invest heavily in developing the site and it's really starting to pay off in my opinion. There is however, a distinct difference in appearance from the entrance and facade of the park to what is found once you enter. The initial view from the roadside is of a fairly dilapidated old barn and a distinct lack of signage until you're actually at the entrance. I think this will change over time. As soon as you enter, everything changes and you really get a flavour of what lies inside the park gates. There is a large pull-in area for arrivals allowing you to head to reception which is located inside the entrance to the Moody Cow bar and restaurant. Check-in was a breeze but I would have liked to have been given a map of the park which would have been a nice touch so I could find my way around. This seems to be standard practice on other sites but not here! Found the pitch easily and decided to pitch up nose in to benefit from the lake view. This wouldn't have been possible without motor-movers. The pitch was large with all the services to hand so setting up was a breeze. The addition of the private, enclosed hot tub was a real bonus. There is one facilities block located centrally on the park that services all guests which was lovely. Spotlessly clean showers and toilets with plenty of sinks. We stayed during an off-peak period with the park less than half full and never had an issue with queuing for showers or toilets. I do wonder if the existing block has the capacity to service a full park though! There is a lovely small farm shop selling a whole host of produce and nik-nak's with some real quality meats on offer. The bar and restaurant was lovely too with a great selection of drinks and snacks along with a comprehensive menu that should cater for everyone's tastes. It was great to see relaxed seating areas within the restaurant allowing you to have pre or post dinner drinks in comfort. Food was good quality fayre and prices were reasonable leading me to conclude that the owners of the park are doing what they can to encourage visitors to stay on the park. There were other new buildings dotted around the entrance and I think these were a trampolining centre and play zone for kids but we didn't venture in. The park is well landscaped and maintained which is really important. Staff were really polite and friendly and there was a great vibe on site. The site is located near to Newquay and Aberaeron within a short drive which both offer a plethora of typical small seaside town amenities. Plenty of really good places to eat, drink, relax and explore. All in all, this site lived up to my high expectation and we'll definitely be back in the near future. Thanks for...
Read moreA superb camp. All staff, maintenance, housekeeping, grounds, bar, shop and reception staff work hard and are most accommodating and friendly. We have had a most enjoyable comfortable stay. The staff work hard in improvements on camp (new drive access etc..) and there is still a large sense of family with the owners themselves fully involved. Quite inspirational the vision here. There is a trampoline park and play area for the children and its a great facility for the local community. Doesn't affect campers but obviously campers can use. Facilities are kept clean, even a top up clean in the evenings. The pitches are spacious and the views are spectacular. There is a real sense of space here. The shop is well stocked for essentials, and the homemade pasties and cookies are delicious. The food in the bistro is top notch, especially Sunday roast. (Back in come winter ish time I suspect). But the burgers , lovely! A relaxed welcoming atmosphere with eclectic decor, which again is inspirational. It's chilled, laid back but efficient and well cared for all round by absolutley everyone. Dog walk on site in the orchard and small stream, perfect for a quick dip and ball throw. Otherwise head to Cai Bach superb beach for dogs all year round. We admire the vision here, solar energy, battery storage, local produce, local people eco friendly as possible. Pitches hardstanding, need rock pegs if putting an awning up..... what can we say a brilliant site, spacious large pitches...hot tubs[well maintained] lodges with hot tubs if you don't want to camp and to top it all some very nice apartment type rooms, with bed and ensuite too, even bring the dog...our girls stayed in two of them and again superb! Final say on staff , they work hard in the background and are so friendly and welcoming but not over the top, nothing false here....we fully recommend staying here, for all the facilities, pitch with hot tub, pitch only on hardstanding with grass area, lodge and hot tub or apartment room with ensuite...food in the bistro or a quick pint...and then pop in the shop for a pastie later, what is not to like. With everything available this camp still retains the family vibe all round..Best camping !...
