Really pleased to arrive and find a small hotel with ample parking at the back. From the road you could easily miss it.We were welcomed and given our key cards. The room was small but had all we needed. Bed was nice and big, and sheets were lovely and soft. The mattress was not the best but ok for a short break. The bathroom had a bath/ shower, nice bright white towels. I do take my own. The carpet needed changing. I thought the rest if the room had been newly decorated. Theres a dressing table, a lump of a wardrobe and case stand. Nice reading lamps and TV. Including air conditioning. The whole place was spotless which was reasurring. The evening meal we had in the conservatory it was a choice of pub food or a little bit more refined. The veggie choices of Rissoto or a different kind of Rissoto were a bit of a let down..but nevertheless we enjoyed what we ordered, nice fish and burgers. French onion soup was gorgeous. Staff were lovely, helpful, polite, and great service. The place was quiet and we both Slept well. Now breakfast was a bit of a let down..they say continental but it was a plate of cheese, salami, white burger rolls, tin mandarins, apricots, boiled eggs, croissants, cereal and mouldy tomatoes how that was missed as they were growing Penicillin! Drinks were fresh Fruit juice. Then your asked if you want sausage or bacon! Strange! I ordered a veggie sausage which was not that great my husband ordered sausages, they looked like the bow of the Mary Rose!! Black and brown and crumbly..we did laugh! I had brown toast which was hacked with a knife into boomerang shapes, and it was clearly cheap bread. The tea was lovely and so was the service. I do hope they do away with the continental it was like the left overs from a christmas party..get the full English going and I will happily pay more. To be honest I would stay again but eat breakfast elsewhere. It was a great price for us, 1 night 96 quid with 2 course meals and a great laugh at breakfast. Staff were...
Read moreAll the staff were very helpful and friendly. The "grab and go" hot breakfast was sufficient, made up the night before and warmed up; served in tin foil takeaway dish but we were supplied with a plate and cutlery. We also had a good pot of tea, toast, yoghurt, orange juice, and were offered fruit, cereal etc. We were able to eat with other diners in the dining room. (distanced). The staff were very friendly and willing. We booked The Queen room but were shown to another, (smaller), Queen room! But we were able to change the next night. The first room was abit damp-smelling and chilly, but I guess it had been empty for many months. We were given a little independent heater which helped a lot. The air-con or heating had no remote. A nice man tried to help, (manager?) but I guess the remote was missing. Both beds could do with a new mattress as they were pretty saggy. There were cobwebs on the ceiling and lots of dust coming out of the chest of drawers. Probably another result of the rooms being empty for so long, but a detail that housekeeping should have dealt with. We have stayed here many times while visiting friends in the area, and it is good to see things picking up...
Read moreThe staff here can’t be beat we extended our stay here do to a medical issue and and I was really beyond myself and this gentleman came up to me and said there was a chemist (pharmacy) where I could get a blood pressure cuff he said he would take me there, I asked him who he was and it turned out he was the owner of this great hotel so he walked me around the corner and was able to get what we needed turns out he has owned this hotel and sister Hotel called Great Western Gatehouse in Ipswhich for 21 years and he commuted here to both places from near London which is a long commute. Then you have his manager who started working here when hotel first opened started out as a porter then he became head chef now he is manager he is really great and it was funny we went down to have dinner in the resturant and there he was dressed in chef outfit and we asked him why he was dressed up like a chef and he said he would be chef as regular one didn’t show up. We have nothing but great things to say. And one of the desk people went out to a store three miles away to get me some...
