I went here to treat myself to a weekend away after a spell of poor health. I couldn't have chosen better really. My room was on the ground floor in the Salmon Cottage building and faced the garden at the back of the property. I wanted serenity and I got it. Lovely deep bath with an amazingly powerful shower and the room was warm and cosy. Bed was super comfy. I ate in the restaurant each night as I like a glass or two of wine with my dinner and didn't want to drive anywhere. The menu, I would say, is fairly simple pub grub but generous portions, well presented and most importantly, hot! I had to ask for half portions on everything. I had breakfast there too. It was ok, a small set of choices but again, plentiful and hot. I'm not an ale drinker but the Big Lamp brewery is right next door and I believe they do tours in high season. I had a walk by the river either before or after dinner every evening. At the weekend the rowers were out (there is a rowing club very nearby which is also nice for a drink with views across the river). The standout for me was the staff, who were really accommodating and instantly made me feel welcome, which is really important when you're travelling alone. I must mention Helen, who couldn't do enough for me and was very attentive. I'd like to go back when the weather is better as I can imagine the river walks would be stunning with the woodlands in full bloom. The building is beautiful and I felt so chilled out when I left on Sunday. It was exactly what I needed and just a 40 minute drive from...

We decided to stay local with what is going on. We wanted a nice meal as 12/09/20 was supposed to be our wedding day which is the day we went. We had tried to book a table but advised we could not and we could just come down and get a table in the marquee, I was advised no food restrictions. We got dressed up and headed down, I had been on the website and it did not mention the limited menu, I have since been on the website to make sure but when I click on the imited food menu it did not work, however that is not the main issue. Anyways when we got there the marquee was not being used and we were told this. The food menu was limited and most meals were £10.95, we ordered the fish and chips little realising wooden forks which were stated would arrive with the food and did not would be used, also they were in cardboard packaging. We waited over 30min ! for this food and I had to go chasing sauces and cutlery. It was a small portion for the price and more expensive than it would have been on the main menu had it been on at £10.25 It was disappointing that for our suppposed wedding day we had a meal we could have got at the coast for half the price. I enjoy the Keelman for drinks although the pints are around £4.00 now and my last pint was vinegary, so they are pricey now.. We left after 2 drinks feeling disappointed and a bit ripped off and wishing we had got a takeaway or drove somewhere a little further. Sorry Keelman, not great this time, doubt we will have...

Having not been since lockdown we were very surprised that our visit today was not as we had experienced in the past. First we were told just to find our own table, this would not have been a issue except there was not direction, very unorganised set up. When my partner who has visual issues went to order coffee he was asked what the table number was, he told the girl where the location was ( it was very easy as it was next to the hedge) she was very rude and told him he needed to go back and get the number, now......she as well as all the staff should know what and where the tables or seats. When they brought the coffee which was disgusting it was in a paper cup not a china cup. All the drinks that other people had were in glasses so it was not a issue they could not not serve china or glass. The coffee was out of a machine and not the type that you ground the beans, the machine was self contained with the mix in it. We have had better coffee at McDonalds. What has happened to this place, the staff were not in uniforms they were very sloppy. We could not drink the coffee so we left and went to another establishment and had lunch and a wonderful cup of coffee. Very disappointed with a place we always...

Stayed for 5 weeks over Christmas & the New Year. Location is excellent, with easy access to Newcastle, Gateshead & the surrounding area. Quiet location next to the Tyne with walks along the river. Food was all home cooked & staff were excellent, friendly and welcoming. We stayed in Salmon Cottage on the ground floor, far enough from the pub so we didn't hear any noise. John, Tracey & Cheryl did a great job of keeping the place spotless & kept us well supplied with everything we needed while Phil provided a friendly face in the bar & restaurant. Compared to local chain hotels, The Keelman offers better value for money, a friendly atmosphere, quiet location and excellent food & drink - what more could you ask! Long stay or short, we'd strongly recommend it.

Used to go here very often with my children and the dogs. Went for the first time this year. Very disappointed with the food. That is also served in cardboard boxes, that you must remove yourself,(that is fine)....table service for food and or either drink. Must remove your own drinks from the tray....why? Who placed them on the tray. I absolutely understand 100% covid protection and follow the government rules,I've worked throughout the pandemic. But while I'm sitting there as a paying customer I feel as tho i have the disease. Staff are all friendly and doing their job,but it's just not the same like many places I suppose. Just looking forward to going and became disappointed.
