I have actually stayed at the Chilkoot Trail Outpost on two occasions, the first in August 2016 for 3 nights and now for 2 nights. Last year it was just my daughter and I. We stayed in a very large cabin which contained 2 large comfortable beds and everything that one could want. This year I am traveling with my daughter and son and we are in a cabin that has 3 beds. The cabins are clean and very well maintained. Last year I asked the owner Kathy if the cabin was new. The cabins are actually 16 years old but you’d never know it because of the way the property is maintained and cared for by owners, Kathy and her husband Fred.
The Chilkoot Trail Outpost is located just outside of town in the beautifully scenic Dyea Flats area, also the site of great hiking. Kathy and Fred are great hosts; they treat you like you are a guest in their home. They will educate you on the area and make recommendations.
They have a nice dining area on premises and breakfast was included with our room rate and includes scrambled eggs, ham, pancakes and other accompaniments. It is made to order and it is excellent. A special dinner if offered at a very reasonable price. There are two types of fish as well as chicken and steak. You choose two of the above which is served with salad, potato and cold slaw. For dessert, you get all of the fixings for s’mores, which you can make by the camp fire.
I have stayed at other places in the Skagway area and this is undoubtedly the best. I would recommend the Chilkoot Trail Outpost...
Read moreIn the summer of 2019, I had to work in this place with the Work and travel program. I have never had such a terrible and traumatic experience as those few months. It was a nightmare. Kathy did not specify where the staff would be living until we arrived. The house we were supposed to live in was rented out to clients. And we had to live in very old, dirty, holey and mouse-infested mobile homes. Although it was promised that the tips would be distributed to all employees, she took them herself. Those whom she liked, she allowed to work more, those she didn't - she didn't. Before we arrived, Kathy said we could take a bus to Skagway whenever we wanted, but when we got there, it turned out that there was no bus going there. We were imprisoned in that area because we were not allowed to use cars, even though we had driving licenses. Emotional violence, bullying, and blackmail were used daily. I have never met such a horrible person as Kathy. Worst summer experience ever. I do not recommend anyone to go here, because the food served is not fresh, the employees are exploited and the guests are cheated. The only understanding and good person here was Fred, Kathy's husband. I am...
Read moreA real treat- truly a home away from home. If you want to meet real Alaskans and gain a taste for the history– then this is the place for you. we were a family preparing for the Chilkoot trail and this was our beginning point and our ending point. Cathy and Fred made our stay memorable. From the first phone call Cathy helped us on to understand the logistics of the Chilkoot hike. I lost my glasses and Cathy gave me hers. We needed transportation and Cathy arranged. We were undecided on where to go for the next week of adventure and Cathy organized. The meals were family style and superb. One night they prepared a picnic for us and we sat around the fire singing songs and roasting marshmallows. The rooms were much roomer than in Skagway and very clean. Internet was fine. Showers were hot and perfect. Bicycles were available. Fred told us where to go fishing. It was nice being away from the bustle of the city at night. I can only tell you this is the first review I have ever written- and I have traveled a lot. Thank you Cathy and Fred your hospitality and friendship made this...
