We are a retired couple based in Chicago, and we travel a LOT - overseas on our own, as well as road trips within the USA. When booking lodging we look for convenient location, comfort, cleanliness, and good value. Scenic Shore Inn, on the southern outskirts of Algoma, had it all. We were pleasantly surprised!
We booked a "Superior" room - just $10/night more than the standard rooms - and were happy with our choice as it had a very good refrig/freezer (freezer was SEPARATE - rare in motel freezers!), microwave, & coffee maker, and was close to SSI's "Gathering Room" which has tables, coffee/tea, and TV. Thus we could bring our own dinners from home (just 2 nights), which is always my preference for health reasons as well as cost.
Two beds were very comfy, adjustable heater worked well, bathroom had a bathtub/shower combo, towels were good, sink was separate with good counter space. Lighting was good, there was a desk & chair, internet worked fine, and our room was very clean.
There are no restaurants next door, but we hadour car and downtown Algoma is close by. This was our 2nd stay in Algoma so we knew it has a really good brewery (Ahnapee) & a very good bakery too (North Water Bakery). There are decent restaurants in the area, too, but as I said, we prefer to eat our own food. A surprise for us was the Algoma town beach - it had great pebbles with fossil corals, granites, limestones, & various quartz family members. So we had a nice time pebble hunting!
We were at SSI Oct 15-17, just 2 nights. Weather was already quite chilly (high in 50's, low in 40's), but for warmer weather, a gas grill on an elevated wrap-around porch (with tables & chairs) is available at SSI for guest use. There's also a heated indoor pool and an exercise room with some equipment. I didn't bring my swimsuit and we had enough exercise as we were out walking all day, but those were nice touches.
Breakfast is included in the room price and it, too, was a pleasant surprise. There were eggs (the processed kind, but that's OK, at least some protein!), sausage, English muffins & bagels, a pancake or waffle maker (? I didn't use it), whole fruit, cereals (including oatmeal), yogurts, and an assortment of juices, milks, and teas (very nice assortment!), as well as coffee. Some whole grain bread would have been nice, but we had brought our own whole wheat bread & hi fiber cereal from home, so we were fine.

Read moreWe have been coming here for at least 7 or 8 years, sometimes as many as three times a year---lately we do once a year. Laurie, Bob and Kristina are the nicest motel owners in the world. The rooms are impeccably clean and so nice and relaxing---beds are very comfy. They now have complimentary continental breakfasts---a nice touch. The lobby is 100% remodeled. Right across the 2-lane highway from Lake Michigan. Algoma itself is a super nice, clean, friendly town, about 25 miles southeast of Green Bay. Only 7 miles south of the awesome Door County. Great restaurants to the south and to the north and to the west, but none to the east! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Glub, glub, glub! (Lake Michigan.) You could take a row boat 90 miles across to Michigan to eat?? The owners love our dogs and always make them feel welcome. Twenty feet away from Subway, Piggly Wiggly and Dollar General. About one mile south of the Algoma Business District, which is such a nice friendly town. And Bearcat's Smoked Fish is to die for. They even sell raw alligator there. Famous for their Brown Sugar Salmon & Trout, smoked in their very own smokehouse. So, come up to Algoma---you will LOVE the Scenic Shore Inn---wonderful owners, peaceful property, plenty of parking 2 feet from your door, reasonable rates, twenty feet from Subway, Piggly Wiggly and Dollar General. Can't wait for October 25th--bringing the wife and the two pooches with---they love it there too! Most of their business is "word of mouth"---once you have stayed here, you will...
Read moreCrystal and I, with friends or family have had the pleasure of staying at Scenic Shore Inn many times over the years. Everyone from fisherman to families, to sophisticated Door County travelers should really enjoy this place that looks across at beautiful Lake Michigan. This was our second stay this season, this time I brought my boys Luke and Cesco. Bob, who, with his daughter Kristina, owns and manages this pretty place on site, rescued us from another reservation that did not go well at another place in Algoma down by the beach. (See my other review so you don't wind up being deceived)|Scenic Shore Inn is a quaint, clean, nicely decorated place to stay with large nice rooms, conference and meeting capability, and a breakfast that Kristina sets out that is great, with a fresh local meat choice, and not infrequently her homemade banana bread, or fresh donuts from a local shop, as well as all the usual nice breakfast options that families enjoy. Their dining area and conference area adjacent to their pool is peaceful and inviting as you can see from the images.|Family owned and operated, high quality and quaint places with great resources like Scenic Shore Inn are few and far between now. We love Door County, and enjoy staying in more peaceful, cool and personally inviting Scenic Shore Inn in...
